Didn't the origin of the canary cry use to be Dinah's exposure in the womb to all the weird energies one tends to be exposed to when hanging out with the JSA: mystic green flame and Johnny's Thunderbolt and the like? I was always partial to that origin.

Ugh. Dinah KNEW her mom was Black Canary! In Birds of Prey she was telling Sin about how she gave the #1 Mom mug to her ironically because BC1 would always miss school events and the like. The only consistent part with what I've seen before of Dinah's origin is that her mom didn't want her to be a costumed hero.

Blech. Why is this book ruining two of my favorite characters? I'm dreading learning what happened in the main story with GA.

I would say I liked it better when she'd grown up knowing the JSAers, but that's still the way it is, being this doesn't exist and all.

Epic fail is epic.

Not to be a jerk, but don't you need scans in a post? There certainly not any in the post, and certainly not any of Dinah's origin being horribly mangled.

;)

I continue to be impressed by how much more out of character everyone appears each month here.

I don't remember Ted ever before now trying to convince Dinah to be a superhero. Support her, yes. Teach her, always. But recruiting her? Pah.

And Dinah, who gave you the amnesia drugs? Do you even know it's Ted under there? Did your sudden and jarring deaging wipe every memory from your head?

Wait, put down the pitchforks and torches, I've figured out why this comic has gone so horribly and terribly wrong lately.

It's an alternate, non-canonically related to anything universe like Superman/Batman. Back in the normal universe, Dinah is still a functional superhero.

See? That works, right?

. . . didn't the BC co-feature start up this issue? Or . . .
::horrified face:: was this it???

John Byrne is no longer the King of Bad Retcons.

I hate being right about the levels of fail Kreisburg will sink toalost as much as I hate it when he surprises me.

When did Dinah Drake ever wear a halter top?

I can see this book making Dinah box-office poison in the eyes of the idiots running the show just like Cass.

Quick question, ladies: how many of you would have told your mom, when you were in high school, that all your "guy friends" thought she was a MILF?

i'm taking a page out of jarodrussell's book

[identity profile] scottyquick.insanejournal.com 2009-07-10 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Gosh, isn't Air so fun and creative?

Third time's a charm...

[identity profile] jarodrussell.insanejournal.com 2009-07-10 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
You know what I do like about these pages? No Green Arrow. As messed up as this may be canon-wise, it makes me smile to see Dinah-sans-Ollie. Ted's smiling puss doesn't help, but it's better than Ollie.

Plus...plus...plus...Dinah has a grappling hook! DINAH HAS A GRAPPLING HOOK! She hasn't used tools since Dixon left BOP. That's...it's...ABOUT DAMN TIME!

If Kreisberg's realized how stupid it was for Dinah not to have a lockpick, and is going to start giving her tools...like Batman, like Ollie, like the Hawks, like Mr. Terrific, like Blue Beetle, like Captain America, and so on...I almost want to pick up the book as a dollar vote in favor of Dinah being equipped with stuff like that. Almost.

yet another strange thing, Ted and Dinah Sr. are both non-powered heroes. Why would Ted feel the need to press Dinah Jr to keep her Canary Cry, which just deafened her best friend, to encourage her to be a hero.

[identity profile] zemo.insanejournal.com 2009-07-10 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
While I understand that a retcon of origin is of great importance for fans, I think some of you are overdoing the Kreisberg-bashing.

Let's look at the issue:

-Black Canary single-handedly beats the menace-de-jour without the slightest problem
-BC's story is the first one
-BC gets to tell Ollie off in his own part of the book
-BC gets a grappling hook (and Kreisberg makes it so that she doesn't seem just like a lame Batman knock-off)
-BC survives the obligatory big explosion AND saves the villain at the same time

I think you can't just bite down on a writer just because he doesn't write your character the same way he or she was written when you started to like them.

'Sides: Ollie's cool in this, and I totally dig Cupid. Can't wait for the Cupid/Black Canary double feature.

[identity profile] scottyquick.insanejournal.com 2009-07-12 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Wait.
What the fuck.
He's drinking out of the #1 mom cup?
But isn't the entire point of this retcon to show that Dinah had no clue that vieuxDinah! was the Black Canary?
