So how many characters have been forced into the Trump parody-outfit now?

Red Skull, Penguin, who else?

Recent story-arc in the IDW comic. Basically, a magic pool turns the Mane 6 evil.

It's kinda rushed and doesn't play the idea to its full potential, but it's still scads better than "Reflections".

I don't think Red Skull's a Trump parody so much as they're both drawing from the same source. And Red Skull's got dibs on that.

I mean, Skull has at least some experience in the office, as former Secretary of Defence.

Some people joke about Sentinel Prime from IDEW's Transformers being similar to Donald Trump.

wow, DC citizens are freaking morons. Such a horrible depiction of Penguin, than again I gave up on Penguin post arkham city.

Probably just Trump, Penguin's been in politics for a while.

Clumsy soapbox writing aside, the Penguin==Trump analogy fails on one important point: Cobblepot ADMITS he's broken the law in the past.

[personal profile] tcampbell1000 2016-11-02 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
True, but it's more than that. Cobblepot never had good looks to trade on, so he always did his best to affect good breeding: he might order the stewed hearts of his enemies served to him with salad, but he'd know which fork to use when he ate them. He's a "big words" guy, whereas Trump's simplistic vocabulary is second-grade reading level, which is why there's just no way to make Trump slogans sound natural in Cobblepot's mouth.

Both of them had aspirations to class ("we got the classiest jets, unbelievable"), but the Penguin can pose as a genteel member of high society, albeit an egotistical one, for hours or days. Trump couldn't maintain that pose for more than twelve seconds, and I'm not sure he even wants to any more.

To be fair, I think that's heavily dependent on the writer. Several takes on Cobblepot are outright mouth-frothing thugs (think Arkham City, or maybe Batman Returns). The BTAS Writer's Bible even made a point of having him always misquote Shakespeare.

And come to think of it, one of '66 Penguin's slogans when running for Mayor was "No politics. Issues confuse people."

[personal profile] tcampbell1000 2016-11-02 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to label those takes on Cobblepot the "bad" ones. There's clearly a thug in him somewhere, and he doesn't even have to be buried that deep (TAS hit about the right level of subtlety), but it seems truer to the point of the character when he's making an effort to be high-class. That's where the name "Penguin" comes from, originally, the image of a fat, awkward man in a suit.

That makes him smart!

No but seriously, Penguin=Trump doesn't work for me. Red Skull was a better fit.

Thinking on it a more accurate story would be Joker and Lex Luthor running for President against each other.
