Mephisto vs. The Silver Surfer

With fan speculation that Sigourney Weaver may be playing Mephisto in the upcoming show The Defenders, I thought it would be neat to revisit one of his first encounters with them, all the way back in Defenders #100...

You've got to love that last image of him.
Mephisto: Lord of deceit, father of all lies, flails around like an angry cat when mildly inconvenienced.

I have to imagine Loki IV sneaks that last title onto Mephisto's business cards when the old devil isn't looking.

Punching Mephisto, one of the few things even MORE inherently satisfying than punching Nazi's.

I have always loved how the Marvel Universe pulls the cosmic and the magical into the same story so beautifully. The stories where characters of science and the supernatural meet have always been some of my favorites.

This is definitely one of them.

Didn't Mephisto first appear as an antagonist in the Silver Surfer's title? That intersection has kind of been baked into the character from his inception.

Hunh, Clea refers to Mephisto as Satan at one point. Given the time this was written, I wonder how that slipped by the CCA.

I don't think there were ever separate CCA censors, just Marvel's internal editorial enforcement.

And I think they had had "Son of Satan" and "Daughter of Satan" as headliners by this time. I think it may have been in the 1980's that they sort of stuck those characters on a shelf. Then they went through a period of leaning heavily on Mephisto as the main devil-figure while having him profess agnosticism as to whether he was the same being as "Satan."

If you mean that "-the light Satan must have meant-" line, she's actually referring to Satan himself, who was the mastermind behind this story arc. (His fellow demon lords Mephisto, Satannish, and Thog the Netherspawn were co-conspirators.)

I'd rather have Mephisto elsewhere

Hmm, if it was the traditional Defenders I'd agree. As he's one of the few beings who could prove a challenge to a group including Dr Strange, Hulk, Namor, Silver Surfer etc.
But the Street level Netflix version, would be somewhat out of their league. I'd rather Mephisto was kept for maybe a Dr Strange or Avengers movie. (It's too late I suppose for the character to pop up in Infinity War. But that would have been a nice tip of the hat to the original Infinity Gauntlet Storyline. I suspect Loki will play the equivalent wild card in the movies.)
