Mephisto vs. The Silver Surfer

With fan speculation that Sigourney Weaver may be playing Mephisto in the upcoming show The Defenders, I thought it would be neat to revisit one of his first encounters with them, all the way back in Defenders #100...

You've got to love that last image of him.
Mephisto: Lord of deceit, father of all lies, flails around like an angry cat when mildly inconvenienced.

Hunh, Clea refers to Mephisto as Satan at one point. Given the time this was written, I wonder how that slipped by the CCA.

I don't think there were ever separate CCA censors, just Marvel's internal editorial enforcement.

And I think they had had "Son of Satan" and "Daughter of Satan" as headliners by this time. I think it may have been in the 1980's that they sort of stuck those characters on a shelf. Then they went through a period of leaning heavily on Mephisto as the main devil-figure while having him profess agnosticism as to whether he was the same being as "Satan."

If you mean that "-the light Satan must have meant-" line, she's actually referring to Satan himself, who was the mastermind behind this story arc. (His fellow demon lords Mephisto, Satannish, and Thog the Netherspawn were co-conspirators.)
