Don't just directly rip dialogue from the original comic! Fuck you!

With Doctor Manhattan that kind of repetition always seems apropo, it was as good a way as any of introducing him. (Still not sure about this whole thing).

This is really only ok if they paid Alan Moore for co writing this issue and we know that didn't happen.

Even if they offered, he'd never want a credit, he makes Marvel credit him as "The Original Writer" now. Besides, they don't have to pay someone for words they've already paid for decades ago. One could argue that's morally wrong but there's no real legal justification for it.

Unless it is a villain who just read WATCHMEN and is deliberately aping it. Like that one story from "The Outer Limits."

It isn't that hard to imagine that Superboy Prime is using stuff from WATCHMEN in his "great revenge" against the DC heroes.

Barry: You're... You're using a plot from A COMIC BOOK?!?
SB Prime: You're one to talk! Jay Garrick was your favorite character!

"Scarecrows and magic and other fatal fears do not bring people closer together. There is no magic substitute for soft caring and hard work, for self-respect and mutual love. If we can learn this from the mistake these frightened men made, then their mistake will not have been merely grotesque, it would at least have been a lesson. A lesson, at last, to be learned."

Amusingly enough Superboy Prime's Girlfriend was also named Laurie(if i recall correctly) so.. well, would be an amazingly entertaining swerve for DC to do(just to see fan reaction)

To be fair, is Doctor Manhattan going to be evil, or just curious?

Wellll...
He vaporised Owlman and Metron back at the end of Geoff John's run of JL.
He vaporised Pandora in Rebirth while she was calling him a monster.
And he killed Reverse-Flash in the course of this storyline.

Now, admittedly Owlman and Reverse-Flash are Bad People, but... given how little threat they really are to him if he's capable of removing people from existence at this point, there were probably easier, gentler ways of getting rid of them than turning them into small clouds of smoke and blood.

... if only he'd kill a Teen Titan. Then we'd know for sure!

I've been cynical about this whole crossover, but I admit to squeeing at that last page. Maybe it's because it's directly lifted from the Watchmen, so it can't mischaracterize Jon. Yet.

Ahh, there's the cynicism again.

Jay Garrick looks an awful lot like John Wesley Shipp in that first panel....

Why not? If this Barry were a bit younger, I wouldn't object to him being drawn more like Grant Gustin. Honestly, comic characters' facial features change so much so often between artists that most of the time they are only identifiable by costume and hair colours/styles.

I honestly think it would be a good thing if comics started taking actors from successful live action adaptations and using them as guidelines on how to draw that character's face. It would give those characters a lot more consistency. Imagine if a comic didn't have to explicitly tell you that that dark haired white guy in a business suit was Bruce Wayne, you knew it as soon as he appeared because he was drawn like Ben Affleck (or Christian Bale or whoever your preferred live action Batman is). Or if you could easily pick Diana out of a crowd of identically armored Amazons because she's the one that looks like Gal Godot (or Lynda Carter etc. etc.).

Not unlike beardy hook-hand Aquaman in "Forever Evil", it's nice to see DC still isn't above saying "Hey, that thing you like? We could give you it! But we won't."

[personal profile] tianyulong 2017-05-27 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you talking about Jay Garrick? It's pretty clear they plan to bring back the entire JSA, this is just a bit of a teaser for that, and to drum up suspense.
