The kid run one hasn't been a thing since Jason Aaron's Wolverine and the X-Men, as far as I know.
Emma taking the "King" title instead of "Queen" isn't anything new. For a while Storm and Magneto shared the White King title. I'm guessing that the names aren't gender dependent and are just relating the roles of the board game pieces with the roles in the organization, with "King" being the highest title. (Though that doesn't address the Lord Cardinal.)
Not sure about King's automatically being superior to Queens like that, as dominance seems to be down more to personality and personal dynamics than position. Lourdes Chantel (The Black Queen preceding Phoenix) seemed subservient to Shaw, but Selene definitely wasn't, unless it suited her ends to make him thinks so. And Emma's role depends on which level of retcon we're at, whether it was the original she earned her position by coming from wealth and old money AND being a mutant and it as sort of suggested "new money" Shaw owed his position to her "Old money" influence, or Morrison's later "Was wealthy, but worked her way up from an entry level position as a dancer" with Shaw as her sponsor.
Shaw might've still technically had higher position over Selene, even if she didn't listen to him much. They're definitely close enough ranks that it's not 'Queen has to listen to King'.
In chess, the Queen is the most powerful piece, but the game can still continue when removed from the board, while the King being outmaneuvered ends the game. Selene is the most powerful member of the Inner Circle bar none, but she more or less joined for the funsies and doesn't push the organization towards its goal unless it amuses her; if she was removed she'd just be replaced. Shaw is the one who reorganized them to do something other than kinky BDSM and start moving to rule, if he was removed and not replaced by someone with similar vision, the group would fall apart.
