Superheroes' backstories are littered with dead parents. So introducing Carol's Mom as alien only to kill her off doesn't really add anything novel, at least in my opinion.
That said, there's very little focus on dead Superhero moms in comics. That's a pretty sparse region. Lots of Dad focus. The only examples I can think of is (sometimes) Wonder Woman, and Supergirl (TV). So... I guess if we're going to go with an overdone trope at least we're doing it right?
There were Jessica Jones and her mom working together for about ten minutes on S2 of the Netflix show. Maybe Mystique and Rogue count? Sort of? And there were Silk Spectre I and II in Watchmen, altho they weren't really a team. Janet and Nadia have a mother-daughter dynamic in the comics, and there was Jan and Hope in MCU AMATW. Who else....

But I dunno... couldn't we have emotionally supportive, loving parents who, and this may sound like crazy talk but stay with me, ain't dead?
