Alex Ross creates a poster to celebrate Captain Marvel

"But Icon_UK, there have been so MANY Captain Marvel's, which Captain Marvel is he honouring?" you ask

"Oh, my sweet summer child," I say, "ALL OF THEM!"

Given the myriad of instantly recognisable art styles, This MAY look like a collage, but it's not! Every single character was by Alex Ross, who I've never seen mimic so many styles at once.

and then some, as he's also included characters derived, inspired as well, and their alter egos and supporting casts.

Basically, if it's a hero (no villains) who has used the name "Captain Marvel" or who transforms from one person (usually a child, or teenager) into another (usually adult) super-powered character using a magic word or easily repeatable gesture, then there are good odds on them being here.

My geek fu is good, but I don't stand a changce of getting them all

Multiple versions of of Captain Marvel and Billy Batson from multiple media
Mary Marvel
Captain Marvel Jr.
Mar-Vell (and Rick Jones)
Monica Rambeau (Captain MArvel, Photon, Pulsar, Spectrum)
Carol Danvers (Ms Marvel, Captain Marvel)
Marvelman/Miracleman
Thunder (From The Legion of Super-Heroes, the Shazam powered character of the 31st Century)
Prime (Ultraverse)
The Gentleman (Astro City)
Dial H for H.E.R.O. (Robby Reed)
Ben 10
The Fly
Ultraman (Toku Heroes)
He-Man and Battle-Cat (Prince Adam and Cringer)
Hoppy the Marvel Bunny
Thunderbunny
OMAC
Mighty Mightor
Thundergirl (Big Bang Comics)
Mighty Man (Big Bang Comics)
Shazzan (60s cartoon)
Thor (And Donald Blake)
Etrigan the Demon
Captain Triumph
Pureheart the Powerful (Archie Andrews)
Superior
Mighty Isis
The Infinity Man (The Forever People)
Adam Warlock (Not seeing that one as much of a connection to be honest as I don't remember him having a non-Adam Warlock persona)

Honestly, the only one I can't see that I expected to is Kid Eternity, (who was even a member of the Shazam family back in the 70's, after being revealed as Freddie Freeman's brother) but I might just be missing him in the crowd.

Kamala Khan's Ms Marvel isn't there eitehr but as she's never used the name Captain Marvel, and her powers are completely different from the theme, I can sort of see why.

There are several which I suspect are from cartoon's, especially old school anime, which I don't recognise, and a couple I feel I should, but don't. (The sinister looking gentleman in black and yellow above Ben 10, and the two just to the left of He-Man; the kid in the baseball cap with the diamond on his chest and the sort of fantasy looking guy crossing his wrists). But if you spot one, please do note it in the comments.

And here are the pencils, if anyone is interested

Adam Warlock (Not seeing that one as much of a connection to be honest as I don't remember him having a non-Adam Warlock persona)

Might be because of the red shirt/lightning bolt on chest combo?

My favorite part is Kid Miracleman hunched in the corner, drawn in grim-n-gritty 'modern' style next to the Silver Age-y Miracleman. 0.2 seconds after this photo was snapped all the others are gonna have a hell of a time trying to contain him...

(Any other evil Marvel's here?)

Would Shazoom from Mad Magazine count?

He was also kind of a replacement in Mar-Vell's role as the cosmic protector/champion of life/Thanos foil.

Genis might count on occasion.

And he's there twice, actually. Maybe thrice, though I'm not spotting his Legacy look right this moment.

Also Etrigan (and Jason Blood, but Etrigan's the one that counts for evil, really). Not sure what his connection here is, though.

[Edit - oops, read your list too fast, and didn't notice you'd already listed him.]

He's all over the place in the theming, and I can't decide if that's awesome-silly or just silly-silly.

The sinister fellow in the black and yellow is Captain Super, from DC's Crisis on Two Earths.
(The Crime Syndicate's counterpart to the Good Captain, as Superwoman in that film is the evil version of Mary Marvel.)

Like how the nu52 Shazam is all the way at the back.
No sign of Phyla.

Also... I haven't read it, but Supreme must've had a Captain Marvel pastiche, right? Is he here?

If he's going to include everyone who used the name, Hulkling was Captain Marvel in the future from Children's Crusade

Am I being dense, or has he missed out Ultimate Captain Marvel and Elvis?

Etrigan will be the same as Thor or He-man - people with superpowered alter egos who aren't actually them

"Split" Captain Marvel of the mid sixties
Fatman, The Human Flying Saucer
Captain Marvelous (MAD Magazine)

and where's Gomer Pyle? ("Shaaa-zam!!")

Wasn't he more a champion of Infinity? The whole life/death champions bit was pretty specific in their narratives.

He transforms because of an old bearded wizard? I think Alex was reaching with that one.

Unless I'm mistaken, Gomer Pyle is to the right of Monica Rambeau.

(Edit: jinx!)

This may actually outdo the epic "Crisis on Infinite Earths" cover with Perez as Ross' utter masterpiece.

The fact he drew each one in specific style like that is mind-blowing.

Elvis' private jet, the Lisa Marie, with his lightning bolt insignia is flying past in the upper left corner.
