Yes, yes, vampire crossover, whatever. It's a token tie-in at best here.

But hey, Ryan North does some interesting character stuff with Reed Richards!

One panel from Fantastic Four #11 (LGY#704). The main story is a Ben Grimm caper that also features a dog and has a tribute to Judge Dredd, but let's look at this panel. Johnny Storm explains a sexy dream he just had. Weird phrasing, no? What's he hiding, I wonder?

So, here's the launch of the post-Dan Slott, Ryan North-led Fantastic Four run. Let's start off with the writer's manifesto for how this series should go:

Got that? Good. The issue itself:

A done-in-one Groundhog Day escapade, yet it does not even feature every member of the Fantastic Four!

And if you thought the current run of Spider-Man has its hero in a bad situation of his own creation, well, you'd better get Peter Parker to hold Reed Richards' beer:

"When my mother read this issue -my mother was not a comic book person - her reaction was that it was a nice Cuban missile crisis story...I realized at that point...people who don't know the stories we are referring to are still able to react to the underlying emotions of a story about the end of the world."

"My original concept was a book that would pay homage to Marvel Comics #1 by including stories with it's stars, the Torch and the Sub-Marnier. I took a break from pursuing regular comic work to produce a package I felt would really represent my best efforts and tell a story I really wanted to tell - a 12-page retelling of the Human Torch's origins, fully illustrated and lettered.

The first person I showed it to was Kurt Busiek, with whom I'd worked with on Open Space, and someone I thought would be interested in my idea for a short story anthology starring Marvel heroes and featuring painted artwork."

Either way, it feels like a very natural and great wrap-up for the entire narrative. It ends on a very positive note, whereas the original thing -- where Phil Sheldon is throwing things around the office and is all bent out of shape, still mourning the death of this teenager he barely knew -- was not a very high, exciting ending for the original project. And it ends on a character, Danny Ketch, who nobody would want to remember anyway by the end of the '90s. -- Alex Ross

But as we have gotten further and further away from 1994, the Danny Ketch Ghost Rider is not this big-hit thing -- he is now one more piece of Marvel past history in the greater universe. I think that doing this sixteen-pager plays with characters who, at this point, have stood the test of time. The new X-Men are going to be the new X-Men in this important watershed moment in comics forever. -- Kurt Busiek

(Princess Evila'd had her turn.)

The man who hated the savior of the world faced him.

Elsewhere, there were two others who hated the savior.

" You wanted something to destroy the dragon, General.. "

They were somewhere dark. )

They faced each other in her apartment.

The enemy faced the hero.

" What is this all about? "

" What it has always been about, Peter Cannon-

" Power. "

Her lips curved. )

He awoke in her New York, out of a demon tempting and into her appealing as she had before.

" I see a power in you that perhaps you do not fully see yourself.

" A power whose limits you have not fully discovered.

" Channel it in the proper direction, Peter-

" And you could rule the world! "

" Really?

" Uh.. how do you know I haven't already? "

He smiled disarmingly. )

He had overt ones, like the guy who tried to kill him with a dragon.

He had ones less so, like the Hooded One and Princess Evila.

They were working behind the scenes.

Their plans were less immediate. )

There were men who, in secret, wanted to kill the dragon.

There was a man who, on his own, wanted to kill the dragon.

One day, he had the weapon to do it with.

He had what he'd invested himself in making. )

Peter Cannon was the dragon he'd saved the world from.

There were those in the world who knew the dragon as a monster and hated it.

There were those who also hated the effects of the dragon.

They sat together. )
