Gotham is another example of how you don’t need Batman in costume to be successful. Heck there’s an Alfred prequel series on right now that takes place before Bruce was even conceived.
I am not arguing if you need Batman. I am dubious this is for Batman fans. I don't think the Alfred prequel has Bruce Wayne fans as their primary target, for example.
This movie is for Joker fans, with a Bruce Wayne character to give something to Batman fans, but this movie is not aimed at them.
Which, if my gut feeling is correct, will translate into Joker finishing his path into villainy by killing the Waynes, which in turns will mean Batman is born. But honestly, I was more about how Killing Joke fans sometimes seem unaware there are other Batman stories.
I agree that a lot of this is the Killing Joke but they are leaning hard into making Joker a kind of every-man, so I think they expect this to have wide appeal, not just comic book fans.
well yeah. minus some specific exceptions, most superhero movies need to work that balance out with a focus on mass appeal. but the succesful ones rarely alienate comic fans, given they tend to be the quickest to spread the word of mouth and work on the Hype machine.
Also fans of gritty Robert Deniro films --- there's the one in which Robert Deniro played the crazed comedian who went after Jerry Lewis's talk show host...can't remember the name of it, except I didn't like the film. Here, Deniro is basically playing the Jerry Lewis role and Joaquin Phoenix is playing Deniro's...
