Is light speed actually gay or is that dude just a presumptuous ass?

She is an ass, and Lightspeed is probably gay.

Done that

Ever seen someone who was obviously attracted to someone of the same gender and just didn't want to admit it? I have, and I tried to help by pretty much confronting them with my observations. They then responded they were tired of hearing people tell them to "come out of the closet" and that they weren't ready to try experimenting. Chances are that Lightspeed's already heard everything Hazmat just said at least half a dozen times.

However, nobody should be forced out of the closet against their will without a lot more reason than just, "you annoy me. Granted, the universe annoys me but right now you're in my sights.

Haha, good bits. Missing a somewhat strange character moment for Finesse, where she moves aggressively against magneto in defence of her mentor Quicksilver, which is a new direction, but interesting.

I haven't decided if she's playing Quicksilver by asking him to teach her about his methods, or really moving her fixation. Maybe both?

Although the fact that Magneto could be touched at all by Finesse's billy club would be pretty disappointing to me if I were a budding supervillain who had idolized Mags as the ultimate bad guy.

Accept it for her sake.

I don't think Finesse is that sophisticated. Her schtick is that for all her prodigious ability read people, she hasn't a clue how to use that information for her own purposes. Her blackmailing of Quicksilver is about as fancy as she's ever got, and it's monumentally crude and blunt.

The funniest part had to be Hawkeye insisting that bad guys never should be let on the good guy teams and always betrayed them. Looked in the mirror lately Clint?

That is the dumbest argument for someone being LGBT that I've ever heard.

"Go team girls" isn't any different from saying "Girl power" or such. And the fact that Julie's power gives off a rainbow effect doesn't make her in anyway homosexual. Her brother and sister have both used the same Acceleration power, do that mean her whole family is gay?

Also "I'm not phobic" she could have fooled me. Calling her "Double Rainbow Barbie" last issue, naturally assuming that Julie's a lesbian because she's single, "You can't decide what team to play for", telling her to come out. It makes me hope that Julie isn't actually LGBT just to show that you can't just assume like that.

God that's a terrible scene.

Hazmat is a spiteful, ignorant, judgmental, miserable brat of a character.

Lightspeed may very well be closeted, but I see no reason for anyone to assume so based on anything she's said or done in the 5 panels of dialogue she's had in this book.

I hope Gage has plans for Lightspeed's character development other than this, from all of the interviews I've read every time he mentions her all he talks about is exploring LGBT issues.

[personal profile] long_silence 2011-11-17 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
And it's great that he's using her at all, but I'm just not crazy about the fact that she seems to just be the token lesbian who doesn't seem to have any storylines of her own that aren't about her being a lesbian.

There's so much more you could do with Julie, she has so much history. She was the smartest of the Power kids so she could bond with Pym or Finesse, she was the first of the Power Pack to kill in battle so she could talk about that with Mettle and Striker, she tried to quit being a hero very recently.

I'm also not crazy about the fact that she's being lectured to come out by the worst bully in the school who's known her for a total 5 minutes.

Gage loves his irony, doesn't he?

I presume she'll grow out of it. She seems to me to be the most child-like emotionally of all the AA. The whole "Hey, if you want a girl to kiss you I'll do it, but be quick I've got other things to do" scene with Reptil in the early issues just screamed "eight-year old!" to me.

In many ways she's more like what Valeria should be written like.

I'd say she also lacks a role model/father figure, and is looking to fill that slot.

[personal profile] long_silence 2011-11-17 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm only concerned about tokenism because like I mentioned before in many of his interviews Gage only focuses on LGBT issues when he talks about Julie, and in her second major scene since she's joined the book she's being told to come out.

In character or not, it's a terrible scene.

Isn't Emma's comment on Tigra's costume a negative compliment?

I don't know if the Finn Hudson comparison works, since Lightspeed isn't a spiteful bully.
