Killing Solaris

Now a sequence that brought me tears of kick-ass joy!

DC One Million #4:

The battle is on! In the future, all the superheroes take on Solaris! Thousands perish, worlds shake!

The JLA has finally been reunited in the future, but Solaris has the final weapon to kill Superman - a Kryptonite fragment, aimed like a missile at the heart of the sun! Green Lantern tries to contain Solaris, but the fragment shoots past his force field.

Superman runs after it, but it's too late to stop it... or is it?

First of all, I just love Martian Manhunter's words here to Resurrection Man, comforting him his final moments that not all is over yet. It's enough to drive me to tears.

But then...

Fuck yeah!

My jaw dropped and I squealed in delight! I love the shift in tone. One moment we're mourning Resurrection Man; the other the good guys are winning with panache. What an emotional roller coaster.

And then the hard-earned happy ending:

Hourman manipulates time and they bring Krypton back to life, including Superman's parents.

And Kyle is so right below:

Ah, that wink! Praise All-Star Superman all you want; this for me is the greatest Superman tale ever told!

At first I read that scene as Hal Jordan still having some kick in him after thousands of years in the Sun, which is canon as far as I'm concerned.
"Hal says: "Fuck You""

and this is why i hold out hope for Morrison. say what you will about how crazy his stuff is... but he knows his characters.... and he gets taht Lois and Clark is THE epic love story of comics.

Actually, come to think of it, All-Star does basically set up this ending in its own final pages.

Basically? I thought it was obvious.

I was just replying to mrosa's original statement.

Considering how much All-Star Superman appears to owe to this depiction of Solaris, I think it's fair to credit this as a legitimately awesome Batman story.

I have to ask....about Maxima. She was killed during this wasn't she? Does anyone have scans of her role during it?

I was hooked on this event back when it first came out and I'm 100% sure Maxima didn't bite it. I don't recall ANY major deaths, come to think of it (which was par for the course of Morrison; the only two heroes he killed were ones he created).

I THINK Maxima was killed during the Superman event, Our Worlds at War. But really don't quote me on that.

I really do like this, and I wish I had access to the whole 'event.' And hey -- for me, that was the definitive Aquaman. Always nice to see.

But ... sorry ... Superman coming out looking like an Academy Award ... *snorts* It's just that first picture, really -- the pose.

Only JUST NOW looking at that Superman Prime symbol do I notice the gap in the Yin Yang creates a vague S shape. Wow.

And "Jigsaw Justice Union [see file: teleport storm accident]" ?! Yeesh. Nightmare Fuel.
