"I've Had Enough Of You."

Wolverine is my favorite character in comics. Full stop.

But I’ve taken particular delight in writing Krakoan-era Beast.

My only question is when this will be retconned and we can get an enjoyable Hank McCoy back again.

They left an out, with Hank having left the brainpatterns of Avengers-era Hank in there.

TBH, when the Skull Cave turned out to be a Skull Mech I genuinely laughed.

"And on that day, Krakoa received a grim reminder... never let Hank McCoy do anything ever."

There's always something unsettling when a writer goes "oh, I just love [Character]!".
But there's also something particularly... ... well, I don't want to say "obnoxious" but it's hard to think of anything else, when they say they like writing a character whose personality they have completely rewritten.

"I love Character X, especially the version I just made up whole cloth who has nothing in relation to any prior version of them!"

I mean, given how many reformed villains we have, it's about time we had a few heroes go in the other ethical direction (Not in a Dark Phoenix "End all life NOW!" way, but in a 90's Colossus "I followed Xaviers dream and all I got for it was dead parents, a dead little sister and an insane and possibly dead brother, so hey, maybe Magneto has a damn point!" way and Hank has been skirting the dark side for a VERY long time now.

I don't like it particularly, but I can see hints at it being a thing for a good few years, especially since Decimation.

"I love writing for the Beast of the Krakoa Era. I can just make him do all sorts of crazy, incomprehensible crap and everyone will just piss and moan about how they want the old, reasonable, likeable Hank McCoy back and, since I feed on their resentment, I will grow ever stronger."

The plot holes are pretty far down the list of this book's sins, but still...

Even assuming Beast stole a bunch of eggs ahead of time, he doesn't have a Proteus to make the adamantium, he doesn't have a Tempus or Tempo to speed up the growth process, he doesn't have a telepath to put a mind in their shells. For the other Beasts he would have needed an Elixir to grow the body. Krakoan resurrection, and the unique importance of the five, takes a pretty big hit if Beast can do it at will in his spare time.

Looking at the row of Logan's he's got there, he's not quite using the Five's approach, he's building them himself piece by piece... perhaps getting adamantium from the remains of deceased Logan's the Five have created at some point.

The rest we can probably just handwave away with" nanites" or something.

This seems to be old school Sinister style cloning, rather than Krakoan resurrection. Not that I know where the difference lies, but growing clones in tubes is a time honored tradition in the MU.

Let me get this straight. Beast was able to, at any time, create his own Wolverines. Instead, he uses the real one, the one who once considered him a friend. So, this isn't about being "the bastard for the job" or the "necessary evil". He's just being an evil bastard.

Amongst other things, I would have hoped that Krakoa would have noticed a giant skeleton.... thingie removing itself from Krakoa, and maybe alerted people, rather than wait for Beast to make his dramatic monologue.

I wonder if "Beast sank a UN Submarine" will be as popular as "Magneto sank a Russian submarine in UNCANNY X-MEN #150." That was mentioned a lot in the X-books. X-MEN #1 (1991) has Magneto grabbing the nukes from the Leningrad to protect Asteroid M.

There is a very serious meme about "If you don't know that X-Men is about civil rights..."

I feel that the writers have lost that thread.

[personal profile] donnblake 2023-04-03 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the upside here is that actually removing Beast from Krakoa should cut down on "The X-men are a nation now, so obviously they're going to commit some war crimes," stuff.

[personal profile] scorntx 2023-04-03 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, Beast's gone, so he won't be committing any more war crimes."
"Hmm."
"Which means we'll have to commit more to make up the difference!"
"Wait, are you sure that's how this works?"
"Shut up!"

I think I'm coming around to enjoying this. They say the best villains are the ones who believe themselves to be the heroes, and that just feels extra true when the villain in question has been a hero.

Granted, it doesn't always work out so well, but something about Beast's descent, along with enjoying and mourning for who he once was, somehow makes this version an enjoyable one to read for me.

Okay, based on the design, the submarine might be a Virginia-class, which means about 130 (give or take) just got killed.

So, that would be a causus belli I'm pretty sure, except they'll gloss over it or cover-it up or some other thing to abrogate general responsibility for the situation getting to this point.

It's the sort of thing that can lead the international community to go "well, I guess it's time for Sentinels," and that never ends well.

[personal profile] gnarll 2023-04-04 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
Beast probably formally qualifies as a supevillain at this point, so Krakoa is absolved of responsibility for his actions. Like its not a casus belli against Poland when Magneto flattens a US military base or sub.

it would be interesting to see the Quiet Council at this point having to either disown Beast or try to keep this quiet which means they have to be responsible for his actions to the international community.
