Detective Comics #1079 is Selina Kyle saving Batman from the Orgham family.

Issue #1078'd been the plan to do so, carried out by the crew she'd recruited.

It'd climaxed in the Orghams being threatened to call off the public hanging of Batman - and their going ahead with it anyway.

#1079 had Batman swinging from a noose in the wind, the Orghams' forces pushing back against Selina's crew, and Catwoman with Prince Arzen and Queen Dariah Orgham.

" .. and I don't think you know Selina Kyle. "

With what she slipped out from her wrists, Eiko was able to get away and out the window.

Elsewhere, Selina thought about what'd played out.

(Azrael caused that explosion, with his flaming sword.)

' They foiled us every step of the way..

' .. The Batman is dead.

' They won.

She went out amongst the Orghams' forces.

(Even with the control of Gotham #1076 ascribed to the Orghams, there's still defiant people.)

' The guards are the easy part. '

' Least not until our escort gets here. '

(Solomon Grundy's been with the Cheshire Cat since #1070 - after being there when she met Cheshire again in #1077's backup, he got looped into Selina's plan.)

Grundy guided them up to " an exit into one of Gotham's old, abandoned railway stations. "

There was just Selina's other distraction for the Orghams' to resolve, Cassandra Cain and Mr. Freeze's attack on the Orghams' Reality Engine - ' .. [humming] away beneath Gotham. Warping truth, shaping thought and the future still. '

(" Natural pathways " refers to the " lines of power " inherent to Gotham City that the Reality Engine is affecting. Freeze has Nora-related plans for them.)

Freeze got away.

(That's Renee Montoya as the Question helping Eiko out, following from the backup in #1076 where she donned the mask again.)

' I brought you this far, Bruce. ' thought Selina. ' But this is as far as I can go.

' If you're going to go farther than me..

(Talia al Ghul's been in Gotham to continue the al Ghuls' conflict with the Orghams - #1070 had her based in Gotham's waterfront.

Two-Face's last appearance in this run was #1068, disentangling himself and Harvey from the Orghams.)

The backup's a focus on Dariah Orgham, the family's matriarch. It's the trip by sea she took to get to Gotham, and what she did on the way over.

At dinner with the small ship's crew, she mentioned that a couple of missing crew members were dead by her hand: " They were - both of them - assassins. "

One more revealed himself: " Die, Orgham!

" Any more of you?

" No?

" No matter.

There was just her, her own loyal men, and one member of the ship's crew.

That surviving crewman came to her in the morning, as the ship was coming into Gotham: " Please..

(Her sincere belief in her family's mythos provides some depth to the previous scene's near-stock " matter-of-fact villain in complete control ".)

" We hid in the dark too long.

" Now we return. "

(Pagecount from the main story's 7 and a little more than 2/10ths of 22. The backup's 2 and under 1/2 of 8.

Writing on the first's Ram V - art's Jason Shawn Alexander and Liam Sharp. Colors're Dave Stewart and letters're Ariana Maher.

Writing on the second's Dan Watters. Art and colors're Juan Ferreyra - letters're Steve Wands.

Detective Comics released twice in December 2023 - this, and issue #1080.

Publisher's DC.)
