I don't know how the writing was broken down. The story was narrated by a super-deformed Stan Lee, so maybe he wrote those bits himself?

The X-Cutioner's not 100% villain, but you can see why X-Men '97 repurposed him as the leader of a hate group.

I first read this as part of the Best of Marvel '96 trade and I'm not entirely sure it needed to be there. I think the art is amazing but the story doesn't seem all that special. It is still cool that the weakest and arguably least developed member of the team finally got a spotlight (and a win).

Looking forward to the return of Carnival Barker Stan in Flashback month.

Tbh, this may have been Marvel's third best regular continuity book at the time (That is to say, after Daredevil and Mark Waid's Captain America run, and not counting Untold Tales of Spider-Man.) And I guess they wanted to get new readers used to, as you alluded to, Flashback Stan.

Well the Spider-Man books in general were pretty good in the brief moments where they just let Ben do his thing (the collection includes a hilarious story from Sensational) but that tended to go out the window every time they come back to the larger Clone Saga plot.


I'm sure you'd be unsurprised to hear that Captain America, Daredevil, and Untold Tales are also represented in that collection.
