Hawkworld Annual #1

Writer: John Ostrander

Pencils and inks: Gary Kwapisz

An adventure into the past with the Flash reveals a surprising link to the Golden Age Hawks.

Katar and Shayera check out the history of their predecessors.

Katar and Shayera are swept back in time when one of Jay Garrick’s old enemies tries to get revenge by killing Jay’s younger self.

Those of you that are unhappy with how different Shayera Thal is to Shiera Hall aren’t going to like how this annual treats the Golden Age Hawkgirl.

Joan Garrick was also swept up in the time travel shenanigans.

In the modern day, Jay and the rest of the Justice Society were lost in Limbo. That is why Joan is moved to tears.

And so the massive retcon headaches that would plague the character really kick in....

I like the story being even-handed enough to do a page of " Wally leeringly de-wings Shayera ", and then a page of " Shayera angrily pummels Wally ".

Oof, no offense, but I actually stopped reading right there. I'll just barely tolerate Wally's "COULDA stripped you nakey but I didn't because I'm so NICE" as the kind of stuff 1990s comics thought was funny and transgressive--but the justification for Shayera being able to lay hands on Wally is just unbelievable by ANY standards. Who knew that the way to defeat super-speedsters was to wait twenty seconds until they stopped using their speed and then hit them in the face? Nothing Wally can do about it, he's already stopped moving fast! He can't START moving fast again when the fist starts coming at him, that's just crazy talk!

I mean, we could've used some Thanagarian de-equilibrializer or revealed a remotely activated booby trap in the wings or just given Shayera a moral victory by having her point out Wally's lost the moral high ground, but we don't get any of that. It's the Hawks' book, so she wins, no reason to think it out any further.
