The Last King of England

Some pages from Gravel #15, which begins a new story arc...

Over the course of the previous two story arcs, Gravel's killed all the members of the Major Seven and the Minor Seven, the 14 ruling magicians of Britain. With all of them dead, that makes him the new top magician.

Does Warren Ellis know how to write anyone who isn't a surly, malajusted asshole?

That said, this is intriguing - in a "Harry Dresden goes rogue" sort of way.

you thought Harry Dresden too? glad I'm not the only one, though Dresden makes more geek and just-overall-badly-made jokes, which I prefer. :)

Well... by definition all Sergeant Majors in every military throughout all time (and probably in all of intergalactic space) are surly, maladjusted assholes.

So I suppose Ellis has finally found the character type who perfectly fits his style of writing.

They don't all have the same voice, though.

Ellis would actually benefit from consulting some Cameron on that score. Even in movies where the military are the bad guys, Cameron writes AWESOME enlisted men.

Atom, Wonder Woman, General Eiling etc. in his JLU episode.

Right, because Frank Miller didn't have a whore fetish two decades ago.

Comic book England has got to do something about their influx of cranky magicians.

I thought it was their major export these days. Surely it makes up a significant percentage of their GDP.

Makes up for the lack of nuclear accidents, I guess.

If nothing else, I'll give Ellis credit for more obscure celebcasting than Millar. Warrington is actually a good and woefully overlooked actor.

Yes, I just said something positive about Ellis.

I for one, and shocked, shocked sir! That you just said that.

Extremely shocked.

I rather like the quick emphases on the various weapons this guys got around his apartment. it was subtle, but it added to the overall message of the piece

Well, I wouldn't call strategic lighting, color contrast, and sharp lines subtle...

Yeah kind of defeats the purpose of having multiple weapon stashes by making them blatantly visible doesn't it.

You know, I'm kind of undecided about the art, but I really like that Gravel doesn't have a perfect sixpack. It just seems like a midsection that you could bounce coins off is the male equivalent of double D breasts in comics. Nine out of five protagonists have it.

Hurm..."John Bull" is almost like the UK equivalent of Ultimate Nick Fury.
