World's Finest Three: When Kon and Tim met for the first time

[personal profile] mllesays asked for early interactions between Tim and Conner, so I'm posting a few pages from the World's Finest Three mini-series (1996), where they met for the first time.

What happened so far: Metallo got tired of destroying Metropolis and tries out Gotham for a change. Oh, and he stole a nuclear reactor. Unfortunately, Batman is out of town and Robin has to take care of a big, tank-like Metallo on his own, which - he fears - is a bit out of his league.

Poor Timmy... though Superboy is totally busy kissing "Miss Kryptonite"-contestants, he takes off to Gotham when he hears that Metallo is on the rampage there.
And as if all that isn't already trouble enough, Poison Ivy felt danger approaching the city, got sick, manipulated the meds taking care of her on their way to the hospital and is now running around freely.
In the meantime Tim tracked down Metallo...

(Ok, I admit that I only posted this scan because of the combination of metallic tentacles and a Robin. *cough*)
A~and Kon arrives!

Kon manages to destroy the currently blind Metallo, but brings the building down as well.

Time for Tim to pack out the kryptonite ring.

If there's interest, I could also post scans of the second part tomorrow.

There is interest.

Also, apparently, Con was an idiot back then. Becasue a woman in a costume coming out of nowhere is obviously a good thing where nothing bad can happen. Hormones or no, that's just stupid.

Pretty much everything I've read of him from back then painted him as totally unlikeable. A dumb, superficial, arrogant glory hound.

Seems like a totally different character from the one running flying around now.

If you're near enough to notice Poison Ivy, you're probably already inhaling lungfuls of her pheremones.

Well, all you have to do is look at that splash panel where he's surrounded by the Sisterhood of the Low-Cut Top to figure out which head is in charge.

There is more than a little bit of interest.

I love these guys, especially at this age. They've very much got that unlikely duo of "smart guy and tough jock" thing going on - for which I'm sure there is a page on that site, but I'm afraid to go find it, lol.

I never noticed SB's little leg band in this godawful nineties outfit - he and Spoiler can be costume buddies!

And my Young Justice trade STILL hasn't come in... any day now... any day...

Every other hero in the 90's had those things. They didn't know what they were or what they did, but they had to have 'em! And Wooh-Grummett. I always liked his art.

I used to love his 90s outfit. Shush! I used to have the HUGEST crush on this Superboy with this outfit.

Better than the T-shirt and jeans he's got going on now...

I somehow love that he's heard Batman/Superman don't get along (::sigh:: bffs!) and thinks the Flying Graysons are "legendary" but nobody's heard of the Robin half of Batman and... Or is he kidding there? (I mean, is the Flying Graysons remark an allusion to Dick?)

But anyway, I really like this. Kon's brand of stupid is obviously a good set up for almost any other character he's working with, especially Tim.

[personal profile] angel_gidget 2010-02-18 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
He's not kidding. At the time, Batman & co. were trying to be low-profile superheros, keeping out of public eye and avoiding the press. They were trying to build up the idea that they were more "urban legends" than human guys in costumes fighting crime. But as a Super, Kon had to know about Batman. But that didn't mean that he got the 411 on all the sidekicks.

The Flying Graysons, however, was just a famous circus act.

I love Tim's way of dealing with Rex, hitting him where it really hurts, his wallet!

The Grummet art is lovely here, matched by the nice use of colour and shading.

I don't care what these buncha cynics say. I LOVED Kon's punky rebel-hair look, and I still like looking back on it. I think the costume still rocks, to boot.

More, please! And I like this Superboy costume. Again, with the 90s hair, jacket, and shades. Not that his current costume isn't hot of course. Why did he go with the T-shirt and jeans look, anyway?

Metal tentacles and Robins? Why, you do know your audience!

It is to my eternal disappointment that YJ is not posted here due to the PAD thing and all that. Less Tim and Kon! *sniff*

This has bugged me about early Kon

[personal profile] mr_austin 2010-02-19 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Has there ever been a good IN-UNIVERSE explanation as to why Kon wasn't getting laid regularly?

Yes, I know the actual explanation is because he's 13-15ish, it's a book ostensibly for kids, and the 'horn dog who gets in his own way' is a classic comedy trope; but I never really bought that the kid never got any pussy.

Yes, he's 13-15ish, but he's a demigod with rockstar pretensions; tell me there isn't SOME deranged groupie/fangirl out there who would take a serious spin on his meat pole?

Sure, I suppose the best explanation is that Kon didn't want to sully the Superman name and/or couldn't close the deal without betraying his age/inexperience; but even WITH all those factors he's a good-looking kid with the stamina/strength of industrial equipment who has no qualms about flirting with hot girls/women and an out-of-control libido.

There must have been SOME girl who managed to get through in the 10+ years he was a horn dog before he finally lost his virginity to Cassie. Was that the case? my memory is fuzzy.

Aside from him being about 14 or 15, which is more than good enough reason for no sex in story, he always seemed to be interested in girls who were a lot older than he was, and despite being a good looking kid was callow and lacked even the basic maturity a woman would be looking for.

It's interesting how they went from bantering and disliking each other in this comic to having a d'aaawwww hug moment in the recent Red Robin comic.

I posted that first panel a while back, on the day CAPTAIN AMERICA #25 came out, IIRC. I was curious about the Cadmus programmers who "gave" Kon his memories putting the legendary Flying Graysons in there.

There is indeed interest. Thanks for posting!

But I'm confused about why no one has heard of Robin. Robin has been around for years. Tim's the third. Bruce & Dick made all sorts of public appearances. Have these people also somehow not heard of the Teen Titans? I know Crisis wiped a lot out, but still... How do you not know Robin?

[personal profile] aegof 2010-02-19 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think at the time, Batman was considered an urban legend. So of course no one's heard of Robin.
