Two-Face and the Riddler get stoned together

A "lost" scene from BATMAN FOREVER:

See, this? This is what happens when you have Denny O'Neil write your adaptation.

Batman Returns is, as I've said before, one of the most nihilistic, unpleasant, revelling in it's own ghastliness for the sake of ghastliness movies I can recall. Too many deeply unpleasant characters, and Batman is little better than the bad guys.

It was, IIRC, more the franchisers who objected to it, since the Happy Meals toys and the action figures had little going for them, and those were where the money was.

Now see, I thought it was a moving love story (more moving than any of the Catwoman stories in the comics) involving cast of severely damaged but lovingly portrayed freaks. (Even the Penguin got an aww moment with the Penguin funeral.) And it was far less nihilistic than TDK's attempt at Fort Apache profundity.

It was directed by the guy responsible for Beetlejuice and A Nightmare Before Christmas. Nobody should have been surprised he took a franchise with more than enough potential for this and dialed it up to 11. A Serious House on a Serious Earth scared me more than this did.

True, he really needed to be told when to stop. but no one did. It's notable that the movies he directs seem to veer into excess (Batman, Batman Returns, Beetlejuice) whereas he was "only" the producer on "The Nightmare Before Christmas", which the IMHO much better Henry Selick directed.
