Also, I heard that O'Neil wasn't pleased with the Nolan-verse, just rumors but if it's true, that's one more thing that we share in common when it comes to Batman.
The first asked if O'Neil thought there was a spiritual successor to Batman. O'Neil, who shepherded that character through most of the '90s as well as writing him in the decades before, sat back and let his mind roll around the question, finally saying that Frank Miller's current version in “Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder” is too dark. He continued that Paul Dini's version, from the animated television show at the time was his previous favorite answer, until Christopher Nolan's recent Batman movies got it just right. The writer elaborated that the films have a plot and logic that was not in the previous Batman movies. O'Neil stated that there has never been just one Batman or type of Batman, that Batman stories, even the silly ones from the '60s or the dark ones from the '80s, are right for their time and have done what they are supposed to do.
As I recall, this scene was in the script. Since I can't believe Joel Schumacher would cut anything out for being too stupid, maybe they lost it for the drug references? Wouldn't want to do anything to stop Mom and Dad from buying Batman Forever Happy Meals for Junior.
Wouldn't surprise me--from what I understood, the reason why they dropped Burton in the first place was that Returns got a lot of complaints by parent groups and such.
I remember my Dad wouldn't let me see BATMAN RETURNS after he read reviews quoting "You flush it, I flaunt it," which the author--and subsequently Dad--took to mean that the Penguin reveled in feces.
Batman Returns is, as I've said before, one of the most nihilistic, unpleasant, revelling in it's own ghastliness for the sake of ghastliness movies I can recall. Too many deeply unpleasant characters, and Batman is little better than the bad guys.
It was, IIRC, more the franchisers who objected to it, since the Happy Meals toys and the action figures had little going for them, and those were where the money was.
For the love of God, why? Burton's whole Schtick is nightmare-inducing creepy movies. If you wanted something else there should be no surprise that the guy responsible for Beetlejuice and The Corpse Bride could create creepy Batman villains.
I couldn't find the scene in the novelization by he-who-shall-not-be-named, which included many/most things from the original screenplay.
Then again, he also expanded on other scenes in great ways, added new ones, or outright rewrote them to improve on the story (Two-Face's death is fifteen times better, as is his character in general). So unless I missed it in my first go-through reading of the novelization, I'm guessing Voldemort thought, "Eh, this is just too silly, I'm cutting it."
Not that I know of! It was made by a friend, adapted from a previous icon that was just the "twikies!""skittles!" back and forth. I think it actually loses something by adding Harvey, but eh, I couldn't resist.
Hey, it led to them tying up and gagging Chris O'Donnell, so whatever it took to make them think THAT was a good idea, I'm all for! (Oh, and they did it to Nicole Kidman too but. y'know, priorities :) )
Speaking as someone who has his priorities in the opposite direction, I still think 'BF' could have done without Nicole Kidman. Talk about a useless character - she didn't do a damn thing throughout the whole movie but be rescued by Batman. I wasn't a big fan of Kim Basinger in the original, either, but at least she served the plot, even if she did shriek at the top of her lungs at every. damn. thing. that happened to her.
Agreed. I was quite impressed. It helped that he invented whole new scenes, fleshed out backstory, and completely changed the cause of Two-Face's death.
