I think it was Jim Owsley/Christopher Priest who said he misread the "Atlas-like sense of responsibility" aspect of Spider-Man's character.

If Joey Q were going to replace MJ like this, he would have just not replaced MJ.
Having Pete develop meaningful relationships with good characters that people care about would pretty much defeat the entire purpose of OMBND.
