This reminded me why I often fine Pete's Atlas-like sense of responsibility irksome: Not that he has it (for a reason), but that so often those he's whining to don't do THIS: Tell him to get the hell over himself and let one of his 314,705,734,057 costumed buddies take up the slack once in a while.

And seconding omgwtflolbbgbye: If Joey Q just HAD to replace MJ, THIS is the way to do it.

For a while, from I'd say the early 80s to the 1986 Spider-marriage, Marvel downplayed "Pete's Atlas-like sense of responsibility." It was more like Peter went out as Spider-Man to get action so he could take pictures of himself fighting crime in order to sell said pictures to get money for rent. Meaning he was being Spider-Man to fight crime *and* make money, just not *that* much money. Just enough for food and shelter.

I think it was Jim Owsley/Christopher Priest who said he misread the "Atlas-like sense of responsibility" aspect of Spider-Man's character.

If Joey Q just HAD to replace MJ, THIS is the way to do it.

If Joey Q were going to replace MJ like this, he would have just not replaced MJ.

Having Pete develop meaningful relationships with good characters that people care about would pretty much defeat the entire purpose of OMBND.
