Sunday Subtext for X-fans

Hey, [personal profile] ejne7 beat me to the subtext punch this week! Is this catching on? :D?

I've recently been introduced to Generation X and the glorious snippy, contentious, intense and subtexty relationship between Jubilation Lee (who still has the single best name in all of comics) and Monet St Croix.

... but the more subtle adorableness of the hand-holding in this panel was the scan that really got me interested.

Hmm, not sure my subtext-ometer is picking up anything from a scene where one person is helping the person behind them climb up a slippery wet rock, but more power to you.

Yeah, I'm not really feeling it either. Of course, seeing this immediately reminds me of what The Deal With Monet was at the time, which kind of sabotages shipping, at least for me.
Monet and Emma on the other hand, now those two had some real chemistry. They ate ice cream together while sitting on pink, telepathic clouds. Gosh, I miss Generation X (the idealized, nostalgic version from my memory anyway).

That Monet was more interesting than the real one.

definately. Peter David writes her as just a generic arrogant type. The original Monet just knew she was better than you and was only slightly obnoxious about it.

The Monet I remember in Gen-X was completely obnoxious about it. Maybe not deliberately, but there was very little to actually like about her, never mind exactly work out why she stayed with the team.

Well, there was enough subtext to fuel a fair few fanfics (20-30+) back in the GenX days. Those have pretty much completely died off since they haven't reunited/met each other in quite a few years now.

Symptomatic of Jubilee's journey of horror. Crucified victim, depowered gimmick super leader of Registration rebel Warriors, X-men hanger on, and now vampire blood junkie.

Her future destiny is still bright though. In the alternate world of Spidergirl, she's been listed as leader of the X-people and shown as a member of the Avengers. In Captain America's writeup, he cites her as a possible Avenger.

X-men: The Heroic Age. One of those file books.
