JLA/99 #6 Let's hear it for the villain
Since I posted pages from the first issue of this miniseries five months ago, I thought I'd post four pages from the end, JLA/the99 #6.

As you may recall, Superman and Wonder Woman, along with several members of the 99, were at the unveiling of a City of the Future when suddenly people in the city (and soon all over the world) began rioting. Other disasters started happening as well, with several people acting out of character.
This turned out to be a teamup of Starro (the starfish one, though the more recent one cameoed) and the 99's main villain Rughal. Rughal has one of the mystic Noor Stones himself, but has used the power it gave him selfishly, to make himself wealthy and nigh-immortal. He believes that deep down, humanity is the prisoner of its basest elements, and only a strong authority figure such as himself can truly accomplish anything worthwhile. So he and Starro have awoken mankind's xenophobia, aggression and territorial instincts, turning all against all. By wiping out 90% of humanity, and using Starro to control the remainder, Rughal will begin a new Golden Age.
In a desperate attempt to stop Rughal, Batman has donned the emotion-controlling Medusa Mask of the Psycho-Pirate, while the Atom and three members of the 99 rush to prevent the city from self-destructing and scattering Starros all over the atmosphere. Superman has finally recovered from his own Starro possession and lifts the city into the air to prevent it from going anywhere.

The anti-detonation team is able to halt the countdown, but not permanently.
Back with Hawkman's team, the new Noor stone user helps heal the world's tectonic plates.
As Dr. Ramzi tries to reason with Rughal, Firestorm arrives, and splits into Jason Rusch and three members of the 99 he'd merged with. The most important of these is Fattah, an irreverent young teleporter.
Rughal starts giving Dr. Ramzi a "Hannibal Lecture". "There's so much you don't understand, Ramzi. The people of the Earth don't want peace. They don't care about your message of universal harmony. They want someone to hate--and they don't care whether the reasons are true or not. That's why Starro will prevail."

Okay, the threat of a nuclear detonation and yet more Starros being released is over. But what about the millions of Starros already out there? For that, you'll have to buy the issue.
