Vengeance miniseries, 4 of 6.

First post. I really hope I don't mess this up. I checked out this comic because Loki was on the cover. There's quite a bit going on in the comic, but I'm sharing one bit because they've taking JIM Loki and made him scarier than he's been in the Thor titles recently...

I'd better give a little background info first. The young Masters have become pretty unimpressed with the old evil guard and have decided to cap their asses and take over. I can't imagine why the heroes (New Teen Brigade), would object to that, but they seem to be fighting. There's a bit about order and chaos needing to be balanced. My interest wasn't really raised until they went after kid!Loki. Since he's a kid now the New Masters decided he's cool and set out to recruit him. Someone told them they could find him at the Met after hours.

That's miss America who just wrecked the Aesir exhibit at a national museum. I think she kind of annoyed Loki with that entrance. At least the villains weren't rude. Remember, she's here because she thought his life was in danger.

And then she calls him short. Loki animates a pet for her to 'play' with.
Skipping a few pages to keep to the page limit, but when she defeats the demon goat Loki uses another toy to banish her to another, very unfriendly looking planet. Mind, I don't know the limits of Miss America's powers, so she might be able to get back on her own strength.

The young Masters are all: 'Hell yeah!', but Loki doesn't seem quite interested in joining them. The Teen Brigade who was monitoring the situation back in their control room just know that Miss America has just disappeared from the radar and quietly shit themselves.

While it was fun to see Loki kick ass, I hope this isn't a sign that he's going to backslide. I'm rather enjoying neutral/good JIM Loki.

I love how Kid!Loki really is the best character right now to comment on a "new vs. old" dynamic.

It's probably why he's come off better than any of the other "old guard" the Brigade/Masters've run up against.

(Okay, Lady Bullseye didn't come off so bad, but she kinda was doing it to a corpse..)

If you like what you've seen of the Young Masters/Teen Brigade here, sure.

(#2's the issue in which that happens, reintroducing the former as more out and out evil.)

The corpse was Bullseye. IDK if there's been a followup on that.

Normally I'd say that his situation probably precluded him calling her for a follow up date, but this IS the MU.

Well she's giving the corpse to Kingpin who is currently running the hand. So Lester's return won't be far off i guess.

I can't complain, i've missed Bullseye. Especially miss Bullseye bickering with Daken.

I like how Loki comes more off as a chaotic neutral here, he seems evil but really you don't know his intentions.

Hell he might even be helping Miss America in his own way and she doesn't even know yet.

i really think that is the best Loki, the quintessential trickster. Tricksters are neither good nor evil, but agents of balance, and often meant to teach lessons

I kinda even see Loki joining and doublecrossing them just for shits and giggles

I'm not really up to date with big two comics, and have no idea what this is--but I quite like it.

Although Miss America's boots are terrible.

They're also kind of 90s.

She's invulnerable, and I think these pages are the longest she's spent on the ground in the entire series so far.

What does Ikol see in them? Easy, they're pretty much a younger version of the wrecking crew. Remember Loki was the kind of guy who'd give an imbecilic testosterone driven former boxer the ability to become whatever he touches and regenerate from injuries that Wolverine would find lethal. I think Ikol wants to replace the Dsir with something a little more malleable. Kid!Loki at least has the sense to recognize that joining up with a group that calls itself "The Young Masters of EVIL" is a waste of time. Blunt tools are one thing but this group proved itself unable to beat someone Loki took care of with a toy and then has the audacity to say to him "You're hired!"

P.S: I don't find them very refreshing.

The Young Masters were intended to be the Young Avengers answer to their older counterparts...but they're really kind of suck. Even Paul Cornell couldn't sell them as a concept (though he tried his best).

If Loki sent Ms. America to another planet, she ain't coming back on her own.

I do get a kick out of the new Ms. America being a Mexican lady.

I wonder how many angry letters they've gotten over it.

The writer did it intentionally since he wanted to represent modern America.

The art they use is utterly fab. I like the twist on the old Frank Miller panel-as-sound-effect technique by having Ms. A. leaping through the effect as she creates it.

Also the little touch of having 'A' on her back pockets. The artist must have anticipated the direction the lecherous fanboy's eyes would stray.

"Ooo, gratuitous butt...oh, hey! Little A's, that's neat. And now, back to the ogle. Mmm dat's good gratuitous."

[personal profile] captainbellman 2011-11-07 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It got a lot of flak when the previews arrived - a whole post on Project Rooftop, no less - but I like it as well. It's quite stylish, and it's like a walking sarcastic remark direct at 90s outfits, gratuitous patriotism, and the number of heroes who have the American flag draped all over them.

You can imagine the MU's Rush Limbaugh would be choking with anger over a scantily-clad Latina draped in the flag calling herself 'Ms. America', and everyone else would be loving it.
