Amazing Spider-Man #674 preview

Look's like Carlie decided to come back from her home planet...and with a new makeover to boot.

So once again, Carlie's Mary-Sueness is in full effect, having deduced what the cops around her couldn't figure out (especially since this isn't the first time in the Marvel universe that supervillains have killed people via dropping them from heights) and ends up looking better for it with the cops disrespecting her. Seriously, look at that cop's sneer. Poor Carlie, how could anyone hate her?

Of course, turns out Carlie has yet another new look with her only distinguishing factor in her appearance being that she has glasses.

Just a reminder, this was how Carlie looked last issue. This is becoming ridiculous now--has anyone ever thought of making a model sheet for the character to pass around to new artists for some sort of consistency? She's been around for years now and no artist has agreed on what she should look like.

They just want us to make a wallpaper of all the various Carlies that's all.

Her look in the preview does seem semi-consistent with the Ramos drawing in the collage in the bottom-right corner.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand we have a new drinking game. Take a shot everytime Carlie changes her appearance drastical-

Hey wait a minute! She originally had red hair? How'd they mess her appearance up to the point where she goes from that to what she currently looks like?

The red hair made it too obvious that she was secretly Mephisto.

If Carlie hadn't broken off the relationships, the money lost to the constant makeovers would have ruined them. You know, barring the other glaring flaws.

Dear Mr. Slott;

1) Lt. Cragface there wouldn't have the authority to pull a C.S.U tech off a case. He could boot her from the scene, but the case would be up to her supervisors.

2) That sort of "show up the idiot" scene? Yes, I know every sort of police procedural and medical drama has a scene like that. Now how many of those "you're wrong; here's why" speeches are done by someone who isn't severely socially awkward (Bones, Criminal Minds, Monk) or just an asshole (House)? We're supposed to like Carlie, right?

Not to mention Sherlock Holmes, who is supposed to be playfully smug because he knows he's brilliant and that the police usually have to go to him for help in the first place because they have no other choice and he's just THAT good. Or Jimmy McNulty from HBO's The Wire, who because he's such a cocky, self-righteous ass whose entire motivation is to prove to everybody that he's the "smartest guy in the room," his superiors not being able to stand him and trying to pull him off cases out of his constantly showing them up is entirely justified and believable.

Also in Detective Conan which actually subverts the whole "show up the idiot" scene in two ways: 1) Ran/Rachel's father, Kogoro Mouri/Richard Moore, while actually smart, is so incredibly lazy that he makes erroneous conclusions, not out of stupidity, but because he just wants the case to be over and done with. And 2) because Shinichi (Jimmy) Kudo is literally a teenager trapped in the body of a 6 year old, no one actually takes him seriously, thus he's forced to play naive and also is forced to constantly tranquilize Moore and mimic his voice in order to expose the culprit, thus also giving Moore credit in the process.

I don't think Carlie's "long jump" comment makes a lot of sense, either. The record long jumps are about ten yards...on level ground, without significant wind. That arch is like eighty feet high; if the kid took a running jump off the top and the wind was at his back, it doesn't seem impossible that he could clear twelve yards.

Hell, just stepping forward would probably clear a yard or two.

The third Carlie in that collage looks like Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Uh, maybe she got a haircut after the breakup?

[personal profile] cleome45 2011-11-12 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, she ticked off the Lt. Doesn't that count as socially awkward?

Possibly, but endearingly so? There's a think line between "adorkable" and "jackass."

Clearly this is all setup for an upcoming Batman/Spider-Man crossover, featuring Clayface as the villain.

Laugh now, but remember I CALLED IT!

"Think line"? You mean "thin line," right? [confused]

Well, I haven't read anything but the scans, but the characters cited above...? That might well be the association the writer's aiming for. I can't really say how successful they are, but there's definitely a number of precedents in pop culture. (Most of them, to be fair, are dudes.)

[personal profile] cleome45 2011-11-12 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know. But you can always hope that this time they'll stick to it. I certainly don't think she looks bad. (I lived through mullet-mania so I'm pretty easy to please. :p )
