Seeing two-sides with conflicting priorities and interpretations of historical data being treated with equal respect in a comic is such a refreshing change.

This should not be such a rare occupancy in comics that I feel giddy just reading it but I am enjoying it while it last *cough*AvX*cough*

Yeah, Schism and the books that follow seems to basically be Civil War done infinitely better.

Is it really that equitable?

I don't think there's a point that Surge, Pixie and Dust make that Rogue or Logan can refute, whilst those latter two DO come across as rather hypocritical.

That's pretty much been my problem with the way that Schism has been handled. The people who should be refuting the Utopia kids ... aren't. Rogue and Logan shouldn't be trying to refute their point, it should be characters like Anole, Hellion, Mercury, Rockslide - you know, the people who actually made the choice to be minors rather than child soldiers. Having Rogue and Logan speak for them is pretty patronising, imo, and i'm surprised no-one has called them out on this.

I actually found the conversation pretty weird because those kids did already make their point, during the Schism follow up. This just seemed like another rehash.

Slightly annoyed that no one pointed out that Surge is still following the people who were on watch when the bus went boom and who pretty much abandoned the survivors afterward, tho.

[personal profile] spacebetween 2012-03-16 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still surprised that they are ignoring what happened to the like Asteroid M, Avalon and Genosha. I don't see how a mutant nation makes it much more safer for them. Schism pretty much proved that and they were lucky to make it through that. School or Utopia, none of them are truly safe areas in the end.

Utopia just destroys the idea of human/mutant cohabitation or understanding that was one of the goals of the X-Men. Which makes Scott founding Utopia look like a hypocrite, as I know for one of the Asteroid Ms he was against it for that very reason.

Good points. I guess find it easier to think that the kids could overlook the larger historical precedents in favor of their immediate experiences if Cyclops had done more to rack up points in the "safe" category as opposed to "not dead yet". It's not like the deaths stopped after Utopia was founded either.

Cyclops has already explicitly said that he thinks Xavier's dream is dead. He's past hoping for coexistence and willing to do whatever he needs to in the name of survival. But I wrote him off as a hero a while back anyway.

He has? Okay that is explains some of his actions now that are borderline similar to what Magneto or even Namor would do.

Can we now have Storm take charge of the team? Out of those still on Utopia she is the only really levelheaded person with real leadership experience that everyone would get behind.

She was the one who questioned Scott not raising his hand when "Who here has been a supervillain?" was asked at the Extinction Team meeting.

Hmm. Surprised Rachel didn't telepatically notice the whole "Hope is psionically controlling her team" thing.

Yes, that still annoys me.

[personal profile] darkknightjrk 2012-03-15 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it possible that Rachel might not know? They may know she's the Mutant Messiah, but it's possible that Cyclops might be keeping the possible Phoenix connection close to his chest.

[personal profile] starwolf_oakley 2012-03-16 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Well, whatever Rachel knows or doesn't know about Hope, presumably she'd be able to detect Hope was controlling the Five Lights. That's just a guess, as I don't know much about the "rules" of telepathy.

[personal profile] darkknightjrk 2012-03-16 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
True, I was more considering what you mentioned about helping her with the Phoenix. I'm taking it that pretty much everyone else is ignoring the mind-control thing and pretending it never happened. I honestly think that would be for the best.

[personal profile] auggie18 2012-03-16 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
She'd also be able to sense if there was a Phoenix connection, like she did with the bird-alien dude. The scene disappointed me a little when they didn't have Hope and Rachel interacting AT ALL. I mean, Hope had fun angsty time with Nate Grey. And seeing as Hope's apparently been doing her Phoenix research, it seems weird that she wouldn't take the chance to talk to a former host.

I mean, I enjoyed the issue, but I had some problems with that scene.
lascoden: Anarky (Default)

[personal profile] lascoden 2012-03-16 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
It may not be telepathy. It seems to kick in when Hope talks, so I think it could be more of along the lines of brainwashing, like a trigger command.

[personal profile] darkknightjrk 2012-03-15 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
On W&TXM--did I read the climax right? Did Beast really BLOW UP Kitty's uterus? 'Cause...wow, that's really messed up. It just seems weird, I would think that would be, if not made a bigger deal, then at least had more lip service than announcing it and the X-team floating away from an explosion.

I also find it odd that the end of Legacy actually does peg Rogue's decision on wanting to see Magneto. I get they're trying to make it a little more real with the long-distance thing, but...he can fly and she can pilot her own supersonic jet. I would think meeting up wouldn't be that hard, and if all else fails, can't they just Skype like normal people?

[personal profile] darkknightjrk 2012-03-16 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Pocket wormholes? How does THAT work?

And while I can definitely see what you mean with the newer stuff, I do think it's a solid book and would probably get new readers, especially young and teen girls with the POV being from Jean Grey.

Pocket wormholes? How does THAT work?

Over the decades they've been expanding Magneto's powers from "magnetism" to "electromagnetism" (bending light around himself to become invisible) to "all four fundamental forces" (like manipulating gravity to create wormholes).

.... this may be the catholic in me... but the crucifiction scene was kinda... sexy.... in my head he is concerned the children will see Daddies making time :D

also yeah i REALLY REALLY liked this issue of Legacy

[personal profile] darkknightjrk 2012-03-16 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Can you explain why you loved Legacy so much? I gave it a read and it wasn't BAD, really, it just...felt like a very standard story overall, like I read it before. For me, W&TXM was far more interesting and exciting.

Well, Exodus' argument, Surge and Pixie's argument as well. Rouge is one of my favorite characters. Like some one pointed out, they showed both sides of the argument...

Plus.... I can't stomach the art in WatXm...it looks like they are channeling Bacholo AND Quietly, and I loathe thier at

[personal profile] darkknightjrk 2012-03-16 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a huge fan of Bachello either, but Quitely? I don't see it at all. Bradshaw reminds me more of Art Adams.

On Season One : You know I don't usually think that Hope looks like Jean, but now that the same guy who used to draw Generation Hope is doing Jean the resemblance is uncanny (and rather uncomfortable). :/

Ok um, if I want to read Gillen's Uncanny X-Men and Legacy, where should I start? (I haven't read much modern X-Men and the numbering throws me off sometimes).
salinea: (Default)

[personal profile] salinea 2012-03-16 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
For Gillen's UXM, either his first issue, which was numbered UXM #534.1 (followed by #535 and so on) or you could start with Regenesis, the renumbering right after Schism, with UXM #1.

For Legacy the easiest would be to jump with the very recent shift to a new writer, Gage, with #260.1 (followed by #261).
