Joe Kubert draws Sergeant Rock
Finally found something for my Joe Kubert "In Memoriam" post.
Among the characters Kubert's art graced is one Sergeant Frank Rock, who was the star of "Our Army at War" for many years.
Three pages of eleven from the lead story, "300th Hill", and a bonus.
An incoming shell takes out the green lieutenant's jeep. The narration, by the way, tells us that Easy Company is completely naked. But being who they are, it's weapons first.
After taking out the tank, Rock tends to the dying lieutenant, who tells him that what's left of Charlie Company is trapped on Cemetery Hill, which must be held at all costs. The remainder of the story is Easy making its way to the new battleground, one fight at a time. The number three hundred is mentioned several times.
And here's about 1 1/3rd pages of the five-page backup story, "Numero Uno" by Bob Kanigher and Lee Elias.
Numero Uno is the greatest matador in all of an unnamed country that nevertheless is obviously Spain. Comes the Civil War, and Numero Uno joins the government forces against the Nazi=backed rebels. He is a symbol of pride and courage to his countrymen.
That is, until the rebels' military might crushes his unit and Numero Uno is taken captive.
Numero Uno is forced to parade down the street with the occupiers in his traje de luces (suit of lights), and the general tells him not to look so sad. The peasants would have lost the war even if Numero Uno hadn't knuckled under.
In the arena, the silent, sullen crowd watches as Numero Uno dances with the bull, performing his magic. The general gloats. Finally, the time comes for the death blow.
The crowd cheers Numero Uno as he passes into glory. "Matadors die...but pride and courage...live forever!:
Next time, probably something from the public domain.
