Stories that make you go "Awwww!" SUPERBOY #70

Kon-El had a lot of "Awwww!" moments. One is SUPERBOY #70, when Superboy returns from Hypertime. (That was a short-lived attempt to bring back Multiple Earths in the mainstream DCU, used in SUPERBOY and THE FLASH.) While traveling alternate Earths, Kon-El found out Clark Kent was really Superman which... hurt his feelings.





First, a visit to the Daily Planet.



Superboy and Lois head to the park, while he wonders if Lois knows Clark is Superman. There Superman is fighting the Four-Armed Terror, and is having problems because Superman is allergic to it. The Four-Armed Terror is a Jack Kirby creation, which were used a lot in Karl Kessel and Tomm Grummet's run on SUPERBOY. They even had a town near Smallville called Kurtzberg.

Kon-El takes care of the Four-Armed Terror.

And here are the "Awwww!" moments.







This was touched on again in SUPERMAN #155, when Kon-El visits the Kent Farm while Clark is visiting. Clark and Kon-El finally talked about it during the "Sins of Youth" crossover.

And this - the 100 issues of his own series, plus his stint in Young Justice and his time with the Teen Titans - this amazingly long arc of character growth from the obnoxious '90s brat/collection of fashion don'ts to true hero and icon in his own right - this is why I just can't accept the New 52 version as a worthy Superboy.

Sigh. The New 52: for everything I do like, there's all this stuff I don't.

Same here. What I like most of it is how he starts off as "Superman" then works he way to Conner Kent as Clark did to become Superman....

I have this issue, as well as the one when he learns Supes' secret identity... now I just need to get the one where he spends the weekend at the Kents....

Mind you, he wasn't Kon-El at the time, just Superboy. He gets the name Kon-El later on, during another "Awwww!" story, where Superman gives him a VR experience of the history of Krypton, and introduces him to someone who was adopted into the El family under the name Kon-El, and then Supes does the same to Superboy.

Who THEN becomes Kon-El, flying off crying tears of Joy at finally having his OWN Name.

And not even noticing that his new name is an anagram of "klone", the definition of an imperfect copy perhaps! :)
