A Little Bit of Bat/Cat

Catwoman is cracking a safe when she notices a bomb.

Nightwing points out how hard it is to live up to Bruce's standards. Batman looks over the good that Selina's done, breaks into her apartment, and feeds her cats.

Hope you enjoyed that. Until next time!

God, I miss this Batman. A guy who's incredibly difficult to deal with and with almost impossibly cruel standards, but still a decent human being who cares about the people around him and lets them know, however awkwardly.

BTAS is the greatest Batman and no one can convince me otherwise.

I may have to agree with you there.

I think Bruce's increasing distance and grimness was better explained in the DCAU too, personally. It starts out due to Dick breaking away to become Nightwing, and gets worse with what the Joker does to Tim, but Bruce's attitude makes more sense; He's distancing himself *because* he cares, because people like the Joker only target people like Tim because of his association with them. And that made far more sense in terms of the standards he held them to; He needed them to be impossibly good because of what could happen to them otherwise, which is perfectly good reasoning when the Joker had, in the DCAU, displayed ways of keeping the entire seven-member Justice League on their toes.

It's a lot better than most interpretations of him in the main comics, where he turns into an asshole because that's the expected characterisation of him.

Except that the reason that DCAU Dick broke away to become Nightwing was that Bruce was already getting more distant from him, and not treating him like an adult.

My bad. I think it's still more justified than most turns toward Batdickery, though. The DCAU team were at least consistent like that, in some ways.

Yeah I think BTAS is the definitive take on Batman in pretty much every aspect.

Not to kill the mood, but... there really ought to be a tag for Nightwing's mullet.

We'd need a bigger tag.

Luckily the DCU comics also dealt with that one!

Oh my gosh. Every single panel of that makes me giggle and grin like an idiot. Love it!

Hold on to the happy Nightwing thoughts, I suspect we might need them quite badly in the not too distant future!

5 years later...

"Do you, Bruce Wayne, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

"She's a criminal."

10 years later...

"Happy mother's day Mommy!"

"I love you, hun. You're a thief."

"Love you too."

50 years later...

"You wanna do somethin' special for our anniversary, Bruce?"

"You're a criminal."

"Yeah, Hawaii might be nice."

He expects more from Catwoman than he does from Two-Face? Weird.

Although, Catwoman seems to do crime just to do it. As I said once on this board, instead of stealing money to buy shiny things, Selena goes right to the shiny things.

[personal profile] lonewolf23k 2013-09-01 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Two-Face is kinda suffering from severe mental problems. All Selina's suffering from is a habit of taking things she likes.

Though Bruce does have something of a blindspot for Harvey, forgiving him more than he would his other villains. Most villains, after beating Robin near to death with a baseball bat for shits and giggles, and just after murdering a judge, would have pretty much lost any and all second chances in perpetuity, but....

Dick has called him on that a few times, and he's never really been able to argue against it. Bruce always sees Harvey as the primary personality being tormented by his Two-Face side, but Dick sees Two-Face first, and Harvey second.

Does Bruce forgive him all that much? "Hush" and "Face the Face" instantly come to mind, but I get the feeling that around here, no-one would use either of those stories as evidence of anything except terrible writing.

Badly written they may be, but in continuity they were... alas.

Well, Harvey is mentally ill. Can't expect too much from someone who is not in control of his mental faculties.

[personal profile] bardbrain 2013-09-04 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Harvey is one of the few Batman villains who legitimately is mentally ill and may not be responsible for his crimes because of it.

The Joker may be crazy but his brand of crazy really doesn't link up with him being a murderous ass. He's aware of what he's doing and that it's seen as wrong. Any insanity he has is a footnote to that and wouldn't work in any real world court.

On the whole, no genius villain who is able to functionally use their genius to commit crime would be able to use the insanity defense.
cyberghostface: (Two-Face)

[personal profile] cyberghostface 2013-09-03 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah as others have said Two-Face is not only mentally ill but he's also Bruce's former friend and was once a good man.

The same could be said about a few of Batman's villains; Victor Fries was a noted scientist and loving husband, Harleen Quinzel was a promising psychiatrist, etc etc.

This is great BTAS art. Although I did wonder why Batman kept trying to shove blue lemonade in Selina's face before I realized it was water.

In the meantime, I'll keep hoping for a happy ending for these two.
