In which children's card games are serious business (Part 2)
Alright, I've dawdled on this long enough (for the half-dozen of you on this community who care about such things). On with the show!
When we last left our hero, he had just saved a sadistic yet tormented henchman from somedark energy discs leg-chopping buzzsaws. Sadly, said henchman's boss simply decides to execute him in a more... discreet manner. With the hero none the wiser.
Let's skip the duel with the evil mime - though he's got one funky character design, the duel with him features an alarming lack of deathtraps. It kind of makes up for that by showing Slifer theExecutive Producer Sky Dragon in action for the first time, and for the even more ridiculous system-gaming that Yugi commits to win, but eh.
Instead, we'll go on ahead to Yugi and Kaiba's tag-team match against the Mask of Darkness and Mask of Light (Umbra and Lumis, for those only familiar with the dubbed anime).
A quick summary of the context: by this point, Yugi and Kaiba each have one of theoverpowered plot coupons Egyptian God cards. Marik has the remaining one, and naturally, wants all three. Thus, he sends out yet another set of card game assassins to duel them for it.
And how do these gentlemen rope their targets into dueling?

Yes, you read that right. Duelist's. Chasity. Belt.
Notably, the anime actually considered this so stupid that they changed it to Mokuba getting kidnapped yet again as the threat against Kaiba. Sadly, this means that we'll never get to see LittleKuriboh's take on it. :(

Huh. Funny to see that they thought up separate "motivators" for Yugi and Kaiba. Had they been reading the previous couple of chapters, they probably would've realized that there was no need for that - Kaiba had mostly spent those chaptersstalking following Yugi around like a homeless puppy. Well, a homeless puppy that goes "duel me duel me duel me!" every five seconds.
Also, I don't know about you, but I can't read any of these scans without hearing LittleKuriboh's voices. Indeed, half the fun comes from seeing how much of the goofiness (like the Masks' acrobatic jumps) that the abridged series makes fun of was actually part of the original, gritty manga.
Anyways, Yugi and Kaiba make it to the top of the huge-ass building...

... so why didn't you just say "killed" the first time around? Are you just doing it to mock the 4Kids dub? Because if so, I approve.

... wait, what's stopping the losing player(s) from just jumping off the glass? Are they just using the honor system here? It probably takes a good few seconds for the counter to go down to zero if a player loses from, say, a few thousand points in one blow - more than enough time to at least try to jump out of the way. These are all only possibilities, sure, but you'd think that they'd at least try to restrain the players' feet.
Ah, well, whatever. Duel and slashy teeth-clenched teamwork between Yugi and Kaiba ensues, Obelisk the Tormentor gets summoned and opens a can of whoopass on the Ghouls, yadda yadda yadda. Now for the fallout!

Aww. Yami Yugi actually sounds disappointed that it wasn't a proper death match (I like to imagine that he's even pouting in that panel). Back in his day, when they said "duel to the death", they meant it.
So, yeah - after this, the two Mask duelists pretty much vanish from the story, with not even a Penalty Game to spice things up a little. It's an odd little echo of the earlier Duelist Kingdom arc, actually, where the Meikyuu/Paradox Brothers similarly avoided the gruesome fates that Yami Yugi opened up on all of Pegasus' other hench-duelists.
I know that a good many of you looking for proper deathtrap action are likely a bit disappointed - like I said, this duel was less Saw and more Die Hard, and there's not even any proper bondage present.
Not to worry, our next installment will feature plenty of that... along with a boatload of evidence demonstrating that even "normal" Marik is a pretty horrible human being, and plenty more slash fodder to go 'round! Stay tuned.

I think wearing that duel disk on your arm is enough of a chastity belt.
