7 Billion Needles (1/?): Falling Onto One
7 Billion Needles is loosely derived from Hal Clement's science fiction novel Needle, published in 1950.
Written and drawn by Nobuaki Tadano, it was serialized in Monthly Comic Flapper from April 2008 to March 2010.
Its English release started in September 2010, with the first volume published by Vertical, a Kodonsha USA imprint (that was consolidated back into Kodonsha USA this year).
That began with something falling from space.
The protagonist, alone, looked up at the sky - and saw something loosely describe an S through it.
The meteor landed.
The darkness dissolved into light through a classroom's windows.
' Wait, wasn't I.. on a school trip? '
After class, she fiddled with the volume a bit.
She did.
He continued in the same vein.
She turned and ran.
Later, she considered things on a bench.
' My aunt'll be pissed if I go home too early.. what should I do? '
She considered her wound.
The dog, hearing its owner calling, left her alone.
The day passed. The crowding of people drove her away.
' I gotta get this wound cleaned and bandaged. '
' It was no daydream, Hikaru. '
' What's going on? ' she wondered to herself.
' I've finally found a way to tune into you..
' You died once.
' You burned up without a trace.
She opened her mouth.
" Shut up!! "
She threw her headphones on the ground.
She stood, panting angrily, the world going on around her.
Frustrated, she walked over to a nearby parked motorcycle and raised her hand.
Energy crackled. There was an explosion.
That night, she was home, taking a bath.
Her uncle and aunt discussed her.
" Is she okay? "
" Hm? What do you mean? "
" She's been acting strangely since she got back from that school trip. "
" Oh, well..
In the bath, she listened to the voice in her ears.
' After I rebuilt your body, before you regained consciousness, I studied everything about this heavenly body, the Earth. '
The voice buzzed on.
The voice, drowned out, surfaced in her ears again.
The next day, at school, the voice was telling her things.
In another classroom, dissections were going on.
He ran out the door.
' This being could destroy all life in the universe! ' the voice told her.
' It is Maelstrom! '
He brought his fist down.
(In Needle, the other entity's host wasn't revealed until near the end.)
