Speaking as someone who has no strong opinions 'bout She-Hulk one way or the other:
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!

(huh? Disney+ series? Don't know what'cher talking about. Look, lemme just enjoy the absence of Aaronfluence before the cynicism kicks in.)

Synergy with the upcoming Disney+ show is certainly the biggest motivator here, but this does lend further credence to the idea that Cates run on Hulk is going to be aggressively putting Bruce Banner back into his old role in the broader MCU. After all, She-Hulk's recent characterization is in large part due to the original not being available to fill his usual role in Aaron's Avengers.

And of course over on Twitter, everyone is screaming about how racist Rainbow Rowell is because of her 2012 YA book, Eleanor and Park.

Because on Twitter, no one can ever let any offense slide.

My one hope for this new She-Hulk, apart from her being fun again, is that Titania doesn't show up and revert back to a villain out of any upcoming-tv-show-related synergy. Sadly, She-Hulk's rogue's gallery is pretty light on memorable, lasting antagonists.

Synergy with the upcoming Disney+ show is certainly the biggest motivator here...

It makes me wonder...I feel as if most people were not happy with the New She-Hulk, so it makes me wonder if Marvel finally took notice to it or another writer wasn't interested in continuing it.

I mean the Hulk is one of the characters that didn't get really affected by the marvel cinematic snergy.

Bruce never developed or got close to Black Widow.
Science Bro's never happened...heck the time science bros was happening, they had the Sin's past issue and other comics making Bruce having a feud or not really liking Tony

Even now...we never got a return of Professor Hulk.

I mean this probably connects to the Hulk's not getting a movie due to his legal issues when it comes to Hulk movies. So I don't think MCU synergy will ever affect the Hulk until he gets his own movie.

You mean Original Sin, right? Sins Past was the story where Gwen Stacy was Norman Osborn’s secret lover.

Thank you, sorry for the mistake

Rowell wrote the best Runaways run since BKW, so this is at least a must try.

You mean to say She-Hulk will be worth reading again Sensational! Savage!

Well, that's that then.

As I said before, I don't think giving She-Hulk a more monstrous appearance and steering her into a more serious direction is necessarily a bad idea. In fact, I think it could've been very interesting and different, but that's just it: They never did anything interesting with it. They just made her into a Savage Hulk stand-in and left it at that. Then they crapped on the fans when they naturally criticized the change. Just not good all around.

I won't hold my breath until the issue comes out.

[personal profile] tinygaylaura 2021-10-19 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it is inherently a bad idea because it takes away everything that made the character interesting and fun to make her a shittier version of her cousin

[personal profile] tinygaylaura 2021-10-19 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I think their run was far better than the original run honestly

[personal profile] tinygaylaura 2021-10-19 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the fact that the solicit for this issue is Marvel admitting that everything Jason Aaron did with the character was crap and no one liked it

Agree to disagree. Personally, I think almost any concept can work with the right execution--unfortunately there wasn't any of that here.

I'd rather like to see her with the same musculature and hair but also be a peppy, go-getting, highly competent lawyer.

[personal profile] tinygaylaura 2021-10-19 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't disagree in theory

I think most of the time there's a gem of a good idea in anything even when the stories told suck

but I think the problem with this take on She Hulk is that the basic concept was so totally removed from why anyone liked the character that it couldn't work

I do agree that in most cases even the most ridiculous or bizarre concept can be made to work if the right writer is handling it but I think there are some that just can't work

[personal profile] tinygaylaura 2021-10-19 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I want a cover where she says "If you buy this series, I promise to track down and tear up every single issue of Jason Aaron's Avengers run" as an incentive to buy it

Hell it would work for me

Yay! I hope some of the comedic elements come back, but articulate lawyer Jen/She-Hulk would be plenty of an improvement.

They had a decent idea and a cool look with Grey She-Hulk. At least that period wasn’t just Hulk with the serial numbers scratched off, and she didn’t change costume every few issue for not much reason.

This looks hopefully fun.

As for the whole 'MCU Synergy' angle, I hear this over and over and yet it never really seems to track that much. The comics tend to absorb successfully realized MCU variations much more than the other way around (ex: Rocket and Groot, Nebula, Drax, Nick Fury, etc.) When Iron Man 2 hit the theaters, for example, it was post-Civil War Tony leading as Director of SHIELD. When Iron Man 3 came out, Tony was discovering he was secretly the result of a Kree Monitor's plot and he had a secret brother and was working on a moon base. But I don't see the comics changing pre-emptively for the MCU...rather when fans come to love the movie versions, the comics versions absorb them.

She-Hulk strikes me as the next of the MCU's legacy team. Most of the recent movies/series have been about introducing inheritors for the Avengers: a new Hawkeye, a new Hulk, a new Black Widow, a new Captain America, a new Iron person and so on. (I'm assuming that Bruce's most recent MCU appearance will be explained in She-Hulk, i.e. his form and his physical condition).

[personal profile] scorntx 2021-10-20 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
... just to be nerdically pedantic: Iron Man 2 was released in 2010. Tony stopped being Director of SHIELD in 2008/2009, after Secret Invasion.
And it's the Rigellians who have Monitors.

(I'd also argue that trying to put Nick L. Fury into the regular comics continuity hasn't really been a breakout success, but that's a whole other thing.)

Buuuut, if it was just a coincidence that just as soon as Jen's getting a Disney+ series she's getting reset back to classic settings, then it's a pretty damn huge coincidence.

Oh, thank god. I was sick of her denial phase. "Rather be free to be ugly"? I'm sorry, did you not see what you were wearing back then? The things you said? And that bit about her daring to compare her "difficulties" back then with Bruce's. Yeah, guys gawked at you. Bruce was hunted by the military and would black out and wake up not knowing what sort of chaos he caused. But YOU had to deal with cat calls.
