The Swamp Thing (2021-) #5 features John Constantine.

It's a detour from #4, which ended with the Suicide Squad being aimed at the titular character.

He, Levi Kamei, was unaware of that manipulation by the man who employed him in his human life - but was aware of his manipulation by the Green that had chosen him to succeed Alec Holland as its avatar.

Once again, that plane of plant life drew him out of his human body and into a green one - this time, in London.

There, Constantine had also been summoned - by someone he knew personally.

She, a magician named Sierra Kirre, described what'd moved her to call on a man she hadn't parted cleanly from.

" I don't know what's going on.. "

(In March 2021, the Police, Crime, Sentencing, and Courts Bill was introduced into Parliament. It included an amendment to the Magistrates’ Courts Act 1980, one that would make " any offence committed by destroying or damaging a memorial " open to being tried with " the full range of sentencing powers. "

The bill was passed and became law on April 28th, 2022.)

" It was on a September night the humming drone began. "

While the Swamp Thing dove into memories and bombs and living in the debris after, John and Sierra went in search of the latter's missing friend Nigel.

The magicians and the elemental converged.

In the man tangled up in the bomb, Sierra recognized Nigel.

" I will try, Constantine.. to reach into the ground.. and beneath.. where my roots can go.

" I will try.. to pull this idea.. from this place. "

' He resurfaces on the desolate edge of a distant island. '

John, meanwhile, took a hit of some " yunshi powder " Sierra had - and went searching in Nigel's psyche.

" There you are, Nige. "

On the island, the bomb went off.

I can't think of anything in Marvel that comes close to this level of recklessness. I mean, at least when the Thunderbolts enlisted Man Thing, it agreed first.

Maria Hill and Beast immediately come to mind. The former can’t buy a pint of milk without conspiring ways to brainwash the farmers, blow up the farm and keep the cow for herself in some underground VR world where it’s milked dry while framing Moon Knight or something, and the latter positively delights to being what he thinks is the “necessary b******” and admits to modelling X-Force off the CIA.

The sad thing is that both of them have shown more restraint than Waller. She's started recruited on a multiversal level and somehow managed to wall off Earth 3 from the other universes. She tried to force Ultraman into her service. That's madness.
