Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

The UK Supreme Court ruled that the legal definition of "woman" is defined solely by biological sex (Whilst also mentioning the protections are still in palce for trans people), crowed over as vindication by those who you never want to see crowing, and leaving trans people in vague limbo whilst Government bodies look to rework their policies.

Pope Francis died at 88, the day after Easter and the day after meeting US VP Vance... coincidence? A Pope who, more than any before, shifted the boundaries in terms of seeking out the excluded and the marginalised and caused uproar when he said things like "If someone who is gay is seeking God, who am I to judge?" and permitted priests to give a blessing to same-sex couples. Not a perfect man by any means, nor as radical as some had hoped, but in terms of the inertia he was working against, probably more progressive than any would have dared hope for ten years ago.

Star Wars Celebration happened in Japan this past weekend, with many new projects announced

A live colossal squid was caught on camera for the first time and is as beautiful as you'd have hoped

And Doctor Who gave us "Lux", which I won't spoil further but was certainly different, in a good way.

"Chag Pesach Sameach" to those who celebrate Passover

Likewise "Happy Easter" to those who celebrate that.

For the rest... there should be plenty of cheap chocolate eggs on Monday, if that helps?

Doctor Who's new season started, with the visually impressive "The Robot Revolution", introducing new companion Belinda Chandra. The plot felt a little on the slight side to me, but I am liking Belinda more confrontational, less starstruck, approach to the Doctor.

Season 2 of "The Last of Us" debuted, which I am sure cheered many looking forward to the further whacky, upbeat adventures of Joel and Ellie.

Universal Studios have announced plans for a new theme part in Bedfordshire, England which seems unexpected.

Will have to leave this a short one due to events arising, but have fun.

Though, amidst tariffs being imposed on islands populated only by penguins (Soemone clearly prayed to the Muse of Memes really hard, and it paid off big time) the peaceful protests across the US at the weekend, were some reassurance that good people are still out there

I do feel I have to mention that scientists, clearly thinking the world isn't heading into chaos fast enough, have gone and genetically tweaked a grey wolf's genes to mimic the properties of the long extinct megafauna known, not dramatically at all, as the "Dire Wolf" and created three puppies. (So, they have not actually "brought them back from extinction" despite the media hyperbole)

Val Kilmer, who played characters as varied as Bruce Wayne/Batman in "Batman Forever", Madmartigan in "Willow", Nick Rivers in "Top Secret" (a personal favourite), Doc Holliday in "Tombstone" and Jim Morrison in "The Doors" passed away at the age of 65.

Disney+ is releasing a documentary about the making of "A Goofy Movie" to celebrate it's 30th Anniversary (and also did a great little mini clip reuniting Bill Farmer and Jason Marsden)

Doctor Who starts a new season this Saturday, and the Doctor and new companion Belinda seem to be getting... a little sidetracked :).

Good news! Apparently Coyote vs. Acme has been sold to a distributor and WILL see the light of theatres in 2026!

A first glimpse of Beyond the Spider-Verse was seen with the release of some stills at CinemaCon though the release date not being until 2027 was a bit disappointing.

It's April Fool's Day, one of the few folk holidays which seems to be A) still very much needed and B) have been so overtaken by reality as to have been rendered null and void. Though there is also C) media sources being a lot more wary about duping their consumers in the age of "fake news" claims.

However, if you have a favourite memory of an April Fool's prank please do share it, I think we need the smile.

Mention has to be made of the remarkable incompetence of the current White House who accidentally added the editor of The Atlantic in a group chat about actual military attack strategies, whilst also being... very very 47th POTUS in their comments about allies.

In happier news, a new Trailer for Doctor Who has dropped which does look very promising.

I've kept forgetting to mention this video for a sort of anti-anime "Pretty Pretty Please - I Don't Want to Be a Magical Girl", which is AMAZING!

Randomly happened upon Spellbound on Netflix, a John Lasseter animation, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater (who also wrote Galavant's songs between them). I know it got some mixed reviews, but so far I'm enjoying it, with The Way It Was Before being a lovely song with vocals by Rachel Zegler (Currently maybe not doing her career too much good with "Snow White"), and the enormously fun I Could Get Used to This with vocals by John Lithgow (Currently maybe not doing his career too much good with "Harry Potter").

There is still hope though: In Montana, speeches by trans and non-binary representatives helped switch the vote of enough Republicans to stop anti-trans legislation

Also, the current US Administration (using the term in it's loosest possible sense) has started losing the many court cases brought against them by those who they summarily fired, and organisations tried to defund.

"Daredevil: Born Again" debuted last week with a two episode drop.

"Ramadan Mubarak" to those who observe it.

Sorry, one of those days where little time for posting! Gotta go!

And rarely has that been better advice after the past few days. I will only note, in passing, that in the UK, even the Daily Mail, our most Right Wing of Right Wing newspapers, came out against Trump and Vance's public mugging of Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. If you're a Right Wing politician and you've lost the support of the Daily Mail, you should REALLY reassess your life choices.

At the other end of the scale, and clinging to fantasy like grim death, we got the Oscars this past weekend, where most of the winners were movies I've still to see so can't really comment on. (I might feel a little miffed about "Wallace and Gromit" losing out, if every clip from "Flow" I'd seen hadn't been breathtakingly gorgeous)

Doctor Who Season 2 got a new trailer amid confirmation that it did spectacularly well on Disney+ being in the top 5 programs globally during it's first run.

The new sentai series Gozyuger gets stranger and stranger:
  • Only one robot between them (they take it in turns to use it, customising it after their own theme, so only one of the team is in the cockpit at a time.
  • The Monster of the Week doesn't grow, but a giant robot baddie shows up separately
  • The actual team-members don't seem to like each other very much and are together more to keep an eye on each other rather than banding together together.
  • Oh, and the new Prime Minister of Japan has weaponised popularity, and can turn into Don Momotaro when he wants to.

Toy Fair took place in New York, with the usual lines represented, and plenty of other things to boot

And in that vein, the question of the week is: Your favourite toy as a child... heck, your favourite toy today even!

And that applies to me too, so there's a lot of stuff going on out there I could cover, but once I started I wouldn't know where to stop and that would not end well for anyone. So might I suggest this instead.

Watched "Alien: Romulus", and you know you're getting old when the cast of an Alien movie appear to be teenagers, even when they're not.

The next season of Doctor Who is apparently due to start on April 12th, though there has been much furore in the press about whether Ncuti Gatwa has "quit" or not, and indeed whether then show will continue... Same as it evr was, just louder, I guess.

Lots of media snippets about upcomng DC movies and series, enough that it may be worth a post of it's own.

David Tennant opened the BAFTA's (British Academy of Film and Television Awards) in energetic style. Pleased to see that Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, won two major awards!

Saturday Night Live, celebrated 50 years of broadcasting. Which probably means a lot more to Americans than it does to me, who hasn't seen a single episode.

Spoiler photos of Nicholas Galitzine from the new Master of the Universe have leaked. He's certainly for the look/hair/dress sense of a Prince Adam, and might confirm rumours that, in this iteration, Adam grows up on Earth, unaware of Eternia until he gets the Sword. Which, whilst pretty harmless, seems like a bit of chickening out, because it's not like "Eternia as high-fantasy setting with added super-tech", is a particularly complicated setup to explain, given they sold the concept to seven year olds without any actual origin in the original cartoon.

I remain that weird balance of impressed and baffled by the live Action How to Train Your Dragon, now we have a full trailer. It looks perfectly cromulent, with the actors doing a fine job of their roles from what I can see, but if it's just a scene for scene remake of the barely 15 year old CGI movie (Which is already barely even based on the original books) what is the actual point?

Finally got around to watching the end of Umbrella Academy Season 4 and I can see why the ending was viewed as divisive.

The confusingly named "Number 1 Sentai Gozyuger" launched in Japan, (especially confusing because it's the 50th anniversary series, given they started in 1975, but it's the 49th season (since they didn't all last exactly one year), and the 50th Super Sentai Team (since LupinRanger vs PatRanger had two different teams in one series). But don't worry, it's apparently confusing to them too.

Black Lightning's creator comes out as trans

Showing that it's never too late to come into your true self, the noted comic book writer who created (along with artist Trevor Von Eeden), Black Lightning (amongst others) has come out as transgender at the age of 73.

I'd seen this hinted at on her Facebook, but wanted to see it posted elsewhere before confirming it here, and now thanks to a twitter post she made, we are delighted to welcome creator Jenny Blake Isabella.

She's use that name for creating, as well as her old name of Tony Isabella (Normally I wouldn't deadname, but she seems happy enough to keep using it, so I think it's more of "another name", than a "dead name", but her tags have been amended to Jenny).

Given the number of struggles that trans people have been facing, now moreso than ever, it would have been perfectly understandable if she'd chosen to hide herself, but she has always been known as an advocate for diversity and inclusion, we salute her choice and her courage.

The Superbowl happened, but I leave discussions and conversations about it to those who follow such things, though I will say that the half time show was quite something!

We note the passing of former DC Editor KC Carlson, who helped steer the Zero Hour event, and the subsequent relaunch of the Legion or Super-Heroes titles, which remain favourites of mine, among many, many others

No doomscrolling, but last week I considered woodland animal pics. This week I think we need to bring on the big guns and break out the chillest, most laid back animal in creation, and leave it at that.

So let us ponder the wisdom of the noble, relaxing and relaxed, capybara lounging in a hot spring with aromatic citrus fruits.

Star Trek: Section 31 dropped and it was... not especially well received and, having seen it, I can see why. Michelle Yeoh was playing her role to the hilt, but her character was so diluted from her earlier Georgieu (who was basically the most evil, ruthless person to have ever lived) but the everything else felt shapeless and barely Trek like, and it clearly being an entire series trimmed down to a movie meant that everything felt rushed and unfinished, which is a shame as the concept of Trek having a Suicide Squad/Mission Impossible team was an interesting one.

Miraculous started season 6 with a modified animation style, a lot more heroes around Paris, and a very creepier new Hawkmoth.

Have to dash to catch a train, so away you go...

Another week I am tempted to put up a video clip of sun dappled fields with a babbling brook and maybe a scenic woodland creature or two because the rest is... well... yeah.... THAT.

However, let us acknowledge Bishop Mariann Budde's heartfelt and articulate plea to POTUS 47 et al to remember the importance of mercy. A plea which was either ignored, or not understood, by the target audience. The dubious theological loops some evangelical groups went into to try and discredit such a simple statement of a basic, important, virtue has been fascinating, if depressing.

Yesterday was the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, and the memorial service was powerful indeed.

On a desperately needed lighter note, it's the fortieth anniversary of Tetris being released. So let's hear your favourite old school/retro video game! :)

That being said, yesterday was... a lot, and none of it in a good way. If you avoided the media coverage of the Inauguration of POTUS 47 then I don't think anyone would blame you, but the world is going to be dealing with the ramifications for a very, very long time.

Rather than go into a rant though, I will offer a shout-out to the behind the scenes government folk who apparently put in a LOT of overtime to get passports with people's correct genders out to them before the new regime arrived. Such people are to be lauded.

(I did mention a specific post regarding the Neil Gaiman situation was going to be created, and my apologies for not having sorted that out yet, it will come soon)

Jay and Miles "Giant Size Special" episode covers the short lived Warlock (as in "former New Mutant", not "Cosmic soul-gem weirdness") series from 1999 and the very short lived M-Tech subline.

Mod Post: The Ghost of New Years Yest to Be asks..

So, following on from last years post (Well, yesterdays, but it's the same thing today), here's to the future!

Let's start by wishing everyone here a happy, successful and peaceful 2025! Well, more peaceful than the Teen Wonder's New Years Eve at any rate! :)

The questions today are: What are you looking forward comics-wise in 2025?
  • A new series?
  • A new character?
  • A new title?
  • A new creative team taking over an old titles?
  • An existing character getting more focus?
Also,
  • Is there a series or character you'd like to see represented on SD that hasn't been? (or at least not to your satisfaction)
Please also feel free to volunteer your services to do so too, the wider ranger of posters we get, the more varied and interesting the POV's we can see expressed, and that's the stuff that keeps me coming back here.

Something which I admit has been absent for far too long are "Theme Weeks", we haven't run one of those in too a long time, partly because the last couple of times it's been tired, there hasn't been much engagement and that can be kind of disheartening for a Mod Team trying to offer enrichment.

You can see a list of the theme's we've had in the past in the Tag list, so please put forward your ideas for a new one, or a rerun of an old one.

Mod Post: The Ghost of New Years Past asks..

"So, what were your favourite comics in 2024?"

(We don't have a spooky looking font here, so... y'know, just make it creepier in your head)

There are a number of ways to look at that question;

1) What were your favourite new comics this year?

This could mean:
  • Single issues?
  • Storylines?
  • Imprints?
  • We'd also allow favourite new characters?

And these can be new titles, or long established ones having a new breath of life blown into them?

Also

2) What were your favourite scans posted here on S_D, be they new or old?

With regard to that latter category, we have certainly been graced by more of the latter than in quite a few previous years, largely thanks to the extraordinary efforts and generosity of the seemingly inexhaustible [personal profile] iamrman, without whom our throughput would have been significantly lower (to say the least) and to whom we think it would raise a festive glass of your liquid of choice as a "Thank you"

Tomorrow we look to the future, but today, as we balance between the new and the old.... we look back... as long as we don't look down!

Mod Post: Off Topic Tuesday

We should mention the passing of Jimmy Carter at age 100, a former US President who was (even his critics agree) a fundamentally good man at his core, showing humility, kindness and determination to use his power to aid others.

Any comparison I might make to the upcoming shitshow would, I suspect, seem redundant, so I shall refrain.

For those who can make it to London, the Sailor Moon Super Musical stage show is playing a limited run in February 2025.

The Doctor Who Christmas Special was... a VERY Steven Moffatt story, for good or ill. Some great moments, but I found myself sharing the view of more than a few reviewers that Nicola Coughlan, whilst perfectly good as Joy, was pretty much wasted given how little she featured in the story (and especially with the Doctor) and that if the story had a one-off companion, it was rather Stephanie de Whalley as Anita, whose friendly chemistry with Ncuti Gatwa was superb and very moving.

Plus, I've mentioned it before, I'll mention it again, "Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl" was a magnificent piece of entertainment which anyone who can should watch, then rewatch to catch the sight gags they missed first time around... and then again to catch the sight gags they missed second time around. Trust me, you'll find some.

Catching up on Skeleton Crew. Okay, liking this more and, so help me, if anything bad happens to Neel the blue elephant-headed kid, I shall not be held accountable for my actions.

Has anyone watched the video game derived series shorts "Secret Level"? Worth the effort to check out?

Sir Anthony Hopkins celebrates his 87th birthday today, and has also announced on his social media that he's now been sober for 49 years. All respect to someone who has faced their issues, controlled them, and is not ashamed to speak about them publicly.

Comic related "Review of the year" post coming later.
