In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.
The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake. And remember, there is always hope.
David Tennant opened the BAFTA's (British Academy of Film and Television Awards) in energetic style. Pleased to see that Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, won two major awards!
Saturday Night Live, celebrated 50 years of broadcasting. Which probably means a lot more to Americans than it does to me, who hasn't seen a single episode.
Spoiler photos of Nicholas Galitzine from the new Master of the Universe have leaked. He's certainly for the look/hair/dress sense of a Prince Adam, and might confirm rumours that, in this iteration, Adam grows up on Earth, unaware of Eternia until he gets the Sword. Which, whilst pretty harmless, seems like a bit of chickening out, because it's not like "Eternia as high-fantasy setting with added super-tech", is a particularly complicated setup to explain, given they sold the concept to seven year olds without any actual origin in the original cartoon.
I remain that weird balance of impressed and baffled by the live Action How to Train Your Dragon, now we have a full trailer. It looks perfectly cromulent, with the actors doing a fine job of their roles from what I can see, but if it's just a scene for scene remake of the barely 15 year old CGI movie (Which is already barely even based on the original books) what is the actual point?
Finally got around to watching the end of Umbrella Academy Season 4 and I can see why the ending was viewed as divisive.
The confusingly named "Number 1 Sentai Gozyuger" launched in Japan, (especially confusing because it's the 50th anniversary series, given they started in 1975, but it's the 49th season (since they didn't all last exactly one year), and the 50th Super Sentai Team (since LupinRanger vs PatRanger had two different teams in one series). But don't worry, it's apparently confusing to them too.
Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper are reuniting as the Ninth Doctor and Rose for Big Finish

Date: 2025-02-18 10:51 am (UTC)I was also thinking of revisiting Knightfall. If anything, just for my own interwst. I may or may not make some posts about it. The whole thing is 9 volumes long, so I will be in it for the long haul.

Date: 2025-02-18 11:14 am (UTC)Anyway it looks like for Christmas someone crucified a toy reindeer to a pole. I noticed it while on the way to my work trial.
Tried to get him down but he was secured with cable ties.
So next time I brought some scissors.....but it was raining and I just wanted to go home.
But the next time I was able to free him!
Well Cobra Kai died the way it lived.....never acknowledging The Next Karate Kid in any way

Twilight Zone season three!
The Arrival: You know a plane landing safely at the airport only for all the passengers to be missing is a pretty interesting hook. And Rod promises us that we have everything we need to solve the mystery. But then it turns out there never was a plane or missing passengers and it was all just the flight inspector having a nervous breakdown about the one case he was never able to solve. BOO!
The Shelter: You see the man's neighbors were on the wrong track here. Rather than going 'Sorry for trying to break into your nuclear fallout shelter we thought it was the end of the world' they should have gone 'You were going to leave us all to die."
If they'd done that the man would have had to admit he was also at fault and probably have to accept their apology.
A Game of Pool: Without a doubt the most dramatic and tense game of pool I've ever seen (I'm being serious it's a very good episode)
Also it turns out Pool Player Heaven is actually a horribly limbo
The Mirror: Hey look it's Castro!
hmm so it looks like overthrowing the dictator was okay but not the mass executions and killing his friends due to paranoia...
The Midnight Sun: Technically this was my introduction to the Twilight Zone via a comic adaption I read in a bookstore in 2009. It was a hell of a thing for a kid to read, showing society breakdown and the only future anyone has is their horrible lingering death.
I particularly remember the part were the man breaks into their apartment to steal their water and we learn what drove him to this.
Once Upon A Time: So that's what Buster Keaton sounds like!
Boy the guy who want's to go back in time to the good old days of 1890 seems a lot creepier nowadays, but he got what was coming to him thankfully.

Date: 2025-02-18 11:40 am (UTC)1. Orb: on the movements of Earth (alternative history, philosophical, mature, dark)
2. The Apothecary Diaries (alternative history, mystery)
3. Ron Kamonohashi's forbidden deducations (mystery, comedy)
4. Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture (alternative history, science fiction, action)
5. My crossdressing classmate (slice of life, romance)
6. Cherry Magic (romantic comedy)
7. Whisper me a love song (slice of life, romance)
8. 7th Time Loop (fantasy, romance)
9. Gushing over Magical Girls (magical girls, porn with plot)
10.No longer allowed in another world (isekai, comedy/parody, meta)
I recommend first four positions in general, next four only to people who like romance, and last two only to super fans of their specific genres.
As for world situation, I feel schadenfreude as western Europe finally feels what it means to be betrayed and maybe our countries FINALLY create a joint force for mutual protection within EU at least. Very on the nose to choose Munich as the place to reveal your intentions in. So far they talked a lot, did nothing.
In Poland the far right PIS party is growing support base and recently crossed the barrier of 50%. They will likely win the presidential elections schedules to take place in May. Their candidate, originally an intellectual and somewhat of a moderate, grew grotesquely evil during the campaign.

Date: 2025-02-18 01:36 pm (UTC)I don't think I need to say this to everyone, but despite the craziness in the world, please please please be super-kind to people in the service industry. My poor daughter has come home in tears over people screaming at her because "she has RUINED their PERFECT DISNEY VACATION!" over things she has absolutely no control over. This past weekend, between Presidents Day weekend, Valentines Day, and over-capacity bookings because of the Daytona 500 race (I have honestly never seen the appeal of watching cars go round-and-round a track for hours, but YMMV), things were especially tense. So please bend over backwards to be kind. I also find cracking stupid jokes helps.
I have suddenly found myself working on three quilts simultaneously. I mentioned this on the Quilting Reddit and someone immediately replied, "Rookie."
I'd read some of it awhile back, but I pulled "The Complete Red Sonja" collection by Gail Simone via Comixology Unlimited, and it was such a wonderful read. Gail really brings a new perspective to the She-Devil!

Date: 2025-02-19 05:42 pm (UTC)Then I wish those entitlepants a very Disney day. (I’m given to understand—and presumably your daughter can confirm or refute—that “Have a very Disney day!” is cast member customer service code for “Fuck yourself with a cactus dipped in Tabasco sauce.”)
(And what’s betting that they’re also pressuring the rest of the family to enact that Perfect Disney Vacation, according to a meticulously predetermined little script?)

Date: 2025-02-18 03:56 pm (UTC)And we haven't even got to the review bombing yet.
But apparently it's made its budget back already, so that's... good? I think?
Might try and go see it this week. Hopefully the internet will be too busy being distracted by the world being on fire to spoil the plot.
(and we've still got Thunderbolts yet to go, which looks like... hmm.)
Apparently the second volume of Classic Guardians of the Galaxy's Epic Collection is out this week.
'Apparently' because the local's been... spotty with Epic Collections the last few months.
So we'll see. Or not see.
Rereading some old Astro Cities.
I know Busiek's on record saying none of the characters are directly based on any from the Big Two that could be named but... Vivi Vector has a lot of Doctor Doom in her.
(Speaking of his Doominess, kept getting this horrible thought that Marvel might do some synergysing next year, and we'll get a Secret Wars II... 2!)

Date: 2025-02-18 05:57 pm (UTC)Thunderbolts* I was more looking forward to before I saw the most recent trailer; it's looking more and more like a Marvel Suicide Squad, right down to the team of people with guns being sent into a shadow-covered area of the city that has been taken over by a super-powered government asset gone rogue. On the other hand, Florence Pugh and David Harbour...

Date: 2025-02-18 06:54 pm (UTC)I watched all of both the American and UK versions of Ghosts recently. Both good shows. Interesting how they handled the necessary changes when you take a show based on the centuries of documented history of the show's country and transplant it to a country whose history is much less documented. I was a little disappointed in how the UK version used almost exclusively flashbacks to give depth to their characters without any followup.
The German version is going to come out soon (They seem to be following the UK version's set up pretty closely except for obvious reasons their soldier is from a more ancient time than WWII) and apparently there's an Australian one coming out as well.
EDIT: Also I finally finished off What We Do in the Shadows. In many ways, the show kinda had to end on a slightly unsatisfying note, as the banality and repetition of an eternal existence was pretty much the main theme.
I also saw someone accuse it of queerbaiting with the Nandor/Guillermo ship not being end game, which brings up the question: is it queerbaiting when the two characters in question are portrayed as definitely and unquestionably queer but they just don't end up together?

Date: 2025-02-18 10:33 pm (UTC)Any idea why the Powers That Be feel the need to do this? Can’t fantasy worlds just exist because?
…the fact that Queen Marlena is from Earth is one of my favorite bits of continuity from the original, so hopefully they'll reference that somehow.
And so is Evil-Lyn—in fact, she was Marlena’s mission partner. You don’t often get that sort of rich backstory, beyond their relationship to the protagonist, involving two middle-aged women.

Date: 2025-02-18 11:42 pm (UTC)So on Christmas Eve (no fooling) I found two(!) ultra-rare manga magazines to fill out my collection, ones I'd spent years searching for and thought I'd never see in my lifetime. My friend in Japan duly agreed to mail them over, and...
US Post ate them. At least, that's what we think happened. I zoned out toward the end of January and forgot to clear out my mailbox, and evidently at some point they stopped by, couldn't fit the parcel in, wrote on the record they'd try to redeliver aaannnnnd... never did. There was no slip or anything, the trail literally dies with their "Will Redeliver the Next Day" entry.
I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure what happened; drove to the post office a bunch of times and they said they didn't have it (couldn't even tell me which of their carriers was at my neighborhood that day); tried to open up an investigation with USPS and they closed it in a matter of days; got someone on the phone and they said a proper case would have to be opened on the Japanese side first. I can barely get a straight answer from anyone on whether it passed through my local post office at all; people have said it might have been returned to sender, but there's no record of any post office deciding that, either.
I really cannot give this thing up for lost; it would take a lifetime to have that kind of luck again.
Does anyone here have any experience with something similar to this? Someone overseas mails you something, it can't reach you for whatever reason, and the post office either hangs on to it or sends it back? At this point I'm almost thinking the latter is the best-case scenario...
