Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Feb. 4th, 2025 08:34 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.
Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.
Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.
It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.
The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me.
No doomscrolling, but last week I considered woodland animal pics. This week I think we need to bring on the big guns and break out the chillest, most laid back animal in creation, and leave it at that.

So let us ponder the wisdom of the noble, relaxing and relaxed, capybara lounging in a hot spring with aromatic citrus fruits.
Star Trek: Section 31 dropped and it was... not especially well received and, having seen it, I can see why. Michelle Yeoh was playing her role to the hilt, but her character was so diluted from her earlier Georgieu (who was basically the most evil, ruthless person to have ever lived) but the everything else felt shapeless and barely Trek like, and it clearly being an entire series trimmed down to a movie meant that everything felt rushed and unfinished, which is a shame as the concept of Trek having a Suicide Squad/Mission Impossible team was an interesting one.
Miraculous started season 6 with a modified animation style, a lot more heroes around Paris, and a very creepier new Hawkmoth.
Have to dash to catch a train, so away you go...

Date: 2025-02-04 10:10 am (UTC)Mercifully I was able to book and appointment and get it fixed that day. I had to cancel a doctor's appointment I arranged so I could get proof that I'm actually disabled (no the medical evidence I got in December doesn't count) because I couldn't bear to wait any longer than I had to.
Also looks like their are no postgraduate courses related to my university degree.
Hooray! A six hour retrospective on Dragon Age by my favourite video analyst! I will unquestionably accept his opinions on Veilguard as my own as I gave up while playing Inquisition!
I read the Powers novel. It was okay but it had some weird twists.
It's odd the books set after volume four but they don't mention any of the stuff that happened there.
Also they get the timeline wrong (saying it's been five years since the story started rather than the seven at least), and one character has a completely different family situation than they did in the comic
You know the theory that Batman actually strangled the Joker at the end of the Killing Joke? It's not a great theory but it at least engages with the story's themes.
Anyway in the novel adaption (yes they made one) it ends with Commissioner Gordon going "Hey look Batman's strangling the Joker I better run over there and stop him"
They also did a Mad Love novel and it ends up in an awkward middle-ground between Villain Harley Quinn and Anti-Hero Harley Quinn which benefits neither
(wait she buys her costume from a store before she breaks Joker out of Arkham?)
Now the guy who does bondage comics, I trust him to retell her origin properly....
Twilight Zone season two:
The Lateness of The Hour: well that's fucked up
There's this lady who lives with her parents alone in an isolated mansion expect for the robots her father built. She wants to get out and live her life but it turns out she's actually a robot. So they wipe her memory and reprogram her to be a maid. The fact they seem to actually love her makes this worse.....
Back There: oh we didn't even get to see Lincon get shot....
The Odyssey of Flight 33: man I love stop-motion dinosaurs
Static: "TV sucks so much. Back in my day we had radio. We had to use and brains and we liked it dangnabbit"

Date: 2025-02-04 10:14 am (UTC)Tymus had a successful surgery. The tumor was removed with a decent margin, and he had no metastasis. The wound is very big, covering most of his back. He is weak, only sleeping and eating, but I am feeling cautiously optimistic.
I befriended several cats over the weeks, and my friend's chinchilla loves me too! They make me very happy.
I also ordered online like a ton of seeds from different herbs and spices typical for Turkish, Arab, Persian and Indian cuisines. They are difficult to come by here, especially fresh, and I hope to grow some in a pot.
I decided not to bother with my own finances. I won't die, I can buy things that make me happy. :)

Date: 2025-02-04 10:52 am (UTC)The winner of the Women's Rumble was pretty predictable, but the resulting WrestleMania match should be good. Assuming the winner chooses to challenge who everybody is saying she will.
The ladder match was suitably brutal as well. Good stuff.

Date: 2025-02-04 11:15 am (UTC)Meanwhile, the seemingly endless quest to re-catalogue and sort my comic book collection continues (up to about number 3,800 of ~6,000) to be interesting. Going through my fairly extensive Green Lantern (and associated titles) collection currently, and reliving the Guy Gardner: Warrior transition at the moment. Oh 90s, you were just so 'extreme'. The picture of Arisia all kitted up with the world's least sensible shoes to go out the door - let alone to Oa - pretty much set me off chuckling for 10 minutes. Although Mrs Llama did say 'So, you claim it was the >boots< you noticed first then?' when she glanced over my shoulder.
Over on the telly box, loving Severance S2, utterly enjoyed Skeleton Crew and still hoping to find time to watch Alien: Romulus when Mrs Llama is out of the house - she...is not a fan of gore. Reached S6 of Supernatural, which remains my thrice a week chill-out treat. Mind you, still haven't managed to get around to finished What If...?'s final season.
ST: SNW and LD rewatch continues to pay major dividends too, and unlike Icon_UK I just can't seem to bring myself to watch Section 31. Despite how much I love Michelle's past acting performances! Then again, I did (eventually) make myself watch all of ST:Voyager, so maybe one day...

Date: 2025-02-04 01:57 pm (UTC)The occupancy permit inspection for the soon-to-be-sold house was last week. We'd been advised that there was a new chief inspector since the last time it'd been checked and he was a stickler for things, so it wasn't a complete surprise when we failed for one thing...
One of our side windows was missing a screen. That's it. And the hell of it is that Red and I have absolutely no idea what became of the one that we know was there when we moved out. But it'll have to be replaced. On the one hand, if that's the worst we're in good shape, but sheesh.
The buyers' inspection was this past weekend, and we got the report yesterday. Everything in there is negotiable, so we'll be talking to the realtors today and see what can be done. Nothing too bad there.
Oh, on a personal note I took a class and learned how to make a charcuterie plate for Valentines Day. I'm not sure that, between my wife and daughter, what will survive today. :)
And last week I finally got around to reading "Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons". and holy cow. Blew me away completely, both the story and the art. And being the enthusiastic soul I am, I said something along those lines on Bluesky, and the next thing I know Kelly Sue DeConnick has picked up on it and forwarded the message on to Nicola Scott, Gene Ha and Phil Jimenez!

Date: 2025-02-04 06:31 pm (UTC)The local's being a bit funny about trade paperbacks, which is a shame because Armor Wars got a rerelease.
The news from Bioware is somehow... not entirely reassuring.
Yeah, sure, they're still on for Mass Effect, but... it does sound like one of those "with a herring" sort of deals.
Saw Marvel had some What If...? novels going, but then it turned out they had a plot.
Dagnabit.
