Super Mario Adventures #1-2

Happy Mario Day! These comics were originally published in Nintendo Power to tie-into Super Mario World, but had amassed enough of a cult following that they were later collected (and then later still reprinted!) in TPB form.

2.67-ish pages each. #1:

#2:

Mario is caught in the blast and petrified, so the Princess leaps after Bowser herself.

Early Super Mario Brothers stories were wacky, crazy, weirder then modern Super Mario Brothers stories. I absolutely love it.

So, while Mario says 'Ciao' and 'Mama Mia', Luigi exclaims 'Egad!' That certainly influenced the voices I heard as I read the rest of the lines...

Not shown: Princess Peach wearing Luigi's outfit. It's one of this comic's highlights.

Didn't know you were going to proceed past this. Plus I didn't want to miss bringing it up on Mario Day.

Still one of my favorite pieces of Mario media. I love how this Princess Peach is always ready to throw down.

And instead of anything like this when Super Princess Peach came out what we got was "Her super powers are emotions."

To be fair, it was more like "her super power is the ability to *control* emotions, while everybody else in the whole kingdom is overwhelmed by them."

Everybody else is reduced to puddles of tears, and she's wielding them precisely as tools and weapons. If anything that says that women are better at controlling their emotions than men.

Not sure that makes it better, positive stereotypes are still stereotypes

It'd be like having a platformer with an asian character who has save the kingdom because everyone else has forgotten how to do math

The difference is that the stereotype for women is that we *can't* control our emotions.

So what's interesting is, this these got me to subscribe to Nintendo Power. Around this time, we saw more video game adaptations of Marvel comics, which were covered in the megazine, which in general helped me get into comics.
