Happy Mario Day! These comics were originally published in Nintendo Power to tie-into Super Mario World, but had amassed enough of a cult following that they were later collected (and then later still reprinted!) in TPB form.

Still one of my favorite pieces of Mario media. I love how this Princess Peach is always ready to throw down.

And instead of anything like this when Super Princess Peach came out what we got was "Her super powers are emotions."

To be fair, it was more like "her super power is the ability to *control* emotions, while everybody else in the whole kingdom is overwhelmed by them."

Everybody else is reduced to puddles of tears, and she's wielding them precisely as tools and weapons. If anything that says that women are better at controlling their emotions than men.

Not sure that makes it better, positive stereotypes are still stereotypes

It'd be like having a platformer with an asian character who has save the kingdom because everyone else has forgotten how to do math

The difference is that the stereotype for women is that we *can't* control our emotions.

As neat as Super Princess Peach is, it’s still not really the best look when out of all the character-based spinoffs—Luigi busts ghosts in haunted homes, Donkey Kong and Yoshi became veritable platformer mascots in their own right, Bowser goes on a great quest to take his throne back, Captain Toad hunts for booty, Wario runs a game company—the one game Peach gets all to herself, she... smiles and cries super hard.
