Reborn Concluded

Four pages from Captain America: Reborn #6, which, while obviously not going to surprise anyone (not, I suppose, that it particularly would have anyway), is still good action, and has some hints at future stories.

The heroes win the day.  Spoiler!

Heh.

Later, Steve monologues about the glimpses he got of the future, which had cool stuff like him and Sharon married with kids, and also not cool stuff, like...

Shit, it's War of the Worlds!

The hinted-at future story seems a lot more overtly sci-fi than much of this title, but then again, Reborn climaxed with the Red Skull's mind in a giant robot fighting the Avengers before getting blown up by Sharon with missiles from his own craft, so maybe Brubaker wants to flex those elements a bit more.

In the old Guardians of the Galaxy timeline "Mars" invaded the planet a la the War of the Worlds and clobbered it and killing most of the superhumans (The mutants having left the planet) leaving Earth vulnerable to invasion by the Badoon in the Guardians' original future time line.

The War of the Worlds trick has also already been used in the Wisdom miniseries. Some psychic nutbar was pulling things that were fiction to the 616-verse, but real in other universes into the 616-verse, including the War of the Worlds Martians. 616-verse even has its own future Killraven in the form of Maureen's kid, if he hasn't been offed by editorial dictate already.

It's been hinted at during Annihilation:Conquest and by future-Major Vance Astro of the current Guardians of the Galaxy that the Badoon will rise to be a threat greater than the Skrulls and Shi'ar.

Since I don't want to buy the comics (No money!) or take time to do research (I'm lazy!), I have one question for those who have. If Cap wasn't dead, what's the deal with the dead body he left after he was "shot?" Didn't they get all the smart Marvel guys, all the clipboards and all the white lab coats and use them all to note that the body was Steve's.

I confused.

Yeah, but didn't it have a big hole in it and was starting to rot? O_O

before getting blown up by Sharon with missiles from his own craft

So Sharon's finally being interesting again instead of moping and being moved around like a doll? Good, 'cause I swear to God, the last time I gave a damn about her was the stomach-stabbing.

I liked the stomach stabbing (though the whole concept of baby-stealing is a plot device I'm so damn tired of), but on the whole, it seems like Sharon was a mopey ragdoll for a good half or more of Steve's gone-period, and especially during Reborn until the last issue. Yes, yes, grieving periods and all that, but there are still far better ways to push the meant-to-be-ness of your OTP than having one be mostly hopeless without the other. Especially since for most of their relationship and before they got involved, Sharon was a bonafide badass.

I had no idea Steve thought the Joker's rictus grin 'beautiful'. Colour me...actually, considering his number 1 villain is a skull, colour me vaguely unsurprised.

The War of the Worlds/Killraven future was used (as a possibility?) in Avengers Forever, too.

Cap vs. Martians.

I approve.

[personal profile] darkknightjrk 2010-01-27 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hell yes.

Though I'm not sure if it's Martians--considering that Skull was in a robo-body last, he might become a virtual conscious and create his own robo-army?

Does it outright say Martians on another page? I'd be more inclined to think it was stuff from the Cuthuluverse on the other side of the Breach from Realm of Kings.

Glad to see him BACK-back.

But god I am SO sick of threatening doomy Marvel futures. Enough of that shit, seriously.

And I can't wait to see Cap meet up with Osborn and make a team of plastic surgeons and dentists very rich.

Well they'd have no reason to show us happy futures. No one would time travel to the present from them and no one would try and stop it from happening.

Where is the story hook in that?

Because the one time that happened:

"Hey guys, I've come from the future, and everyone loves mutants and the environment is fine. And--"
SNIKT

"Hey, what was he saying?"
"Just a trick, bub."
