Casstoon regarding Barbara possibly returning to the Batgirl role

On a similar subject, Newsarama are currently running a poll asking who people would like the next Batgirl to be. Currently Cass is in the lead with nearly 400 votes more votes than Barbara, with Steph only a few dozen votes behind her.

Which I think is kind of neat. ^^

Jaimezrael? Bugfall? I'm confused!

Jaime has a huge advantage that Cass doesn't: Exposure outside of the comics. That cartoon is why, even though his series was cancelled, he's getting a backup solo strip, pronto. If the cartoon goes on for a while, Jaime, not Ted, will be who is primarily identified as Blue Beetle, if he isn't, already.

Think of how many people watched BtAS and it's spin-offs vs how many read Cass's series. Look at who's getting books or backup strips, this June: Harley, Jaime, Renee... Yep, Cass isn't as well known as Renee Montoya, let alone Barbara Gordon. It's the characters that have either crossed over into other media, like Jaime, or originated there, like Harley and Renee, that are getting pushed.

They really needed to have Cass as Batgirl in that Batman cartoon with the different designs and voices from a few years back. Even though it wasn't as good as the earlier one, it would have gotten Cass some much needed exposure. As it is, when you say "Batgirl", most think of this cute redhead.

I'm assuming the last panel is a "Knightfall" or "Knightquest" reference to when Azrael was wearing the cowl.

[identity profile] scottyquick.insanejournal.com 2009-04-14 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! I somehow missed that.

[identity profile] jarodrussell.insanejournal.com 2009-04-14 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well...if you were only 10 when you started using Google to get into comics...I can kind of see why.

*feels very old*

Not to get into comics, silly, to cultivate my nerdishness. Many hours were wasted spent arguing over what was the best Yu-Gi-Oh deck and how awesome Harry Potter is (SUPER AWESOME OR MEGA AWESOME?)

[identity profile] parsimonia.insanejournal.com 2009-04-14 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh.

[identity profile] philippos42.insanejournal.com 2009-04-14 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, what the hell, it's all fanfic anyway.

I loved the Earth 3 Jaime Blue Beetle (aka Scarlet Scarab) appearance in "Brave and the Bold"

Jaime (Talking to his armour) - "The other's don't know what I'm capable of. Someday I'll show them I've got the true heart of a hero"

Batman (in hiding) - Hero? A possible ally?

Jaime - ...I keep it in a big jar at the back of my closet!

Batman (scowls...)

[identity profile] parsimonia.insanejournal.com 2009-04-14 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, yes, that was cute.

[identity profile] parsimonia.insanejournal.com 2009-04-14 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
...but he's also a dentist, right?

[identity profile] jlbarnett.insanejournal.com 2009-04-14 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
not enough comic book time would have elapsed for that to happen.

[identity profile] parsimonia.insanejournal.com 2009-04-14 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
But still. In his own book when someone tried to turn him evil, he became a dentist. :D

That's how he murdered the Titans, of course.

Hahaha, DEATH BY DENTISTRY!

Good job on drawing Jaime!

Don't vote for "Babs", it's a trick!

Harley as the new Batgirl? this intrigues me!

[identity profile] saralakali.insanejournal.com 2009-04-14 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh.

(Psst. Babs was a Congresswoman, not a Senator.)

[identity profile] octopussoir.insanejournal.com 2009-04-14 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Babs said it herself, after God knows how many years in a wheelchair she is no longer able to fit into her old batsuit.
Of course they'll probably have a Rockyesque 'getting-into-shape' montage for that.

Or ignore previous canon, that works too.

[identity profile] statham1986.insanejournal.com 2009-04-15 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
If we transplant Barbara into Rocky, we can put Joker in the role of Apollo Creed, man! It would be fantastic! But who would be Adrian?

[identity profile] dustbunny105.insanejournal.com 2009-04-15 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Dinah, of course!

[identity profile] octopussoir.insanejournal.com 2009-04-15 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Dinah? Sounds better than running to the top of a mountain to scream, "DIICCKKK!"

[identity profile] psychop_rex.insanejournal.com 2009-04-15 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see why we need a new Batgirl in the first place - we've already got a perfectly good one as is. I mean, yes, messed up by editorial mandate, sure, but who isn't these days? She's popular, she's immediately recognizable, she's a respected part of the Bat-family - why does she need to be replaced?
I'm not conservative when it comes to comics - I like change. Change is fine - it keeps things shaken up and interesting. But these days it seems like there's this vast appetite for novelty that demands constant, unrelenting change - if it doesn't elicit a gasp of shock every few pages, it doesn't hold water. For crying out loud, the original Batgirl held onto her title for, what - almost thirty years? And Cass has been around for, what, about ten, fifteen? She still has years of growing and changing left in her - she shouldn't be tossed aside for the new flavor of the month. It's maddening.

[identity profile] menagerie.insanejournal.com 2009-04-15 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
We will need another one because, really, she's becoming Batman. Don't ask how.

[identity profile] psychop_rex.insanejournal.com 2009-04-15 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
If that DOES happen, it will be a very clear sign that Didio has finally snapped.

[identity profile] parsimonia.insanejournal.com 2009-04-15 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, Babs was Batgirl for about 21 years, and has now been Oracle for about 20 years. I think Cass has been around for 9 or 10 years.

[identity profile] psychop_rex.insanejournal.com 2009-04-15 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, fine, but you know what I mean. She was Batgirl for over two decades, anyway - that's a fair chunk of time.

[identity profile] parsimonia.insanejournal.com 2009-04-15 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
True, but I think it's important to note that she's been Oracle for almost as long.

[identity profile] psychop_rex.insanejournal.com 2009-04-15 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
My point, though, was that the previous Batgirl was around for a long time before she gave up the title, and we got a lot of classic stories out of her before she became Oracle (and afterwards, of course, but that's a different discussion). The current Batgirl has the potential to stick around for just as long or longer, and it's supremely pointless to boot her out just when she's getting established.

[identity profile] 04nbod.insanejournal.com 2009-04-15 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
but 90's fans will still love babs. Primaily because of B:TAS

[identity profile] sailorlibra.insanejournal.com 2009-04-15 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
No. The Batgirl from B:TAS got on my nerves.

Babs is so much less annoying as Oracle.
