Same nit pick I had when I first saw these pages. Japanese steel frankly sucks thats why they historically put such care into their swords, because they had to compinsate for the impurities in the metal.
That was then. Now Japan can import all the iron ore it wants for its steel. Which is why Nippon Steel is the second-largest steel producer in the world. Notice that the sword was forged in the present day.
Japanese iron sucks, actually. The steel is a bit different, the high carbon quotient used in the making helped in the old days but it still wasn't any better than anywhere else. Somewhat worse even. But modern, and the forging date is 2010, carbon treating and industrial steel melting procedures mean that there's usually no big differences between countries. And the iron ore used in Japan would probably be import anyway.
Delphyne! I still think her relationship with Amadeus has been a little rushed, but I have a hard time caring too much about that when she is being such an utter badass.
Clarification, please. Is 'New Tartarus' meant to be the latest incarnation of the OLD Tartarus - i.e, the punishing grounds of the afterlife - gone all high-tech, or is it simply a name? Also, is it my imagination, or does that 'Death scrunchie' have SKULLS on it?
New Tartarus is the prison compound for the Olympus Group, a business conglomerate run by various members of the Greek Pantheon in the Incredible Herc series.
I believe that the scrunchie does have skulls on it. It's awesome.
I just want to say thanks to EVERYONE for posting over the past week. I had no idea how many AWESOME female characters have been created in the last few years. I recognized and knew them all, but holy crap, there's been a deluge of them.
Marvel canon goes with the version of the myth that of the three, only Medusa could turn humans to stone, and she's not of Medusa's bloodline. The only reason she was able to temporarily turn Athena to stone was because she was wearing a helmet made from Athena's shield, granting her Medusa's powers.
Depends which version you're reading. They're always referred to as sisters, but either they were all gorgons to begin with, all had snakes for hair, all could turn to stone, or the other two were gorgons to begin with and Medusa was a human cursed by Athena who was adopted by the other two, was the only one of the three who wasn't immortal, was the only one who could turn people into stone, or they were all three gorgons to begin with and Medusa was merely cursed to have snakes for hair (the other two didn't) and all three could turn people to stone, and so on and so forth. To my memory, there's at least four different versions.
There's also the version where Delphyne refers to one of the female serpents who lived near Delphi. Killed by Apollo, like the Python, for causing various problems. (Or because he wanted her cave, take your choice.)
It's a lot fun. Good comedy and some good action sequences. Out of all of the books I bought over the past two year I always looked forward to opening Incredible Herc first.
Some of the Amadeus Cho stuff got tedious in moments but the payoff was worth it.
I'll try to post some cute stuff from the series in two weeks after I finish with the Idiot Root posts.
The same issue of Prince of Power that the above scans are from has a sequence in which Amadeus Cho gives the Egyptian Lioness Goddess of Vengeance roofies turning her into a lolcat.
The strapping-on-of-the-weapons scene is such an action cliche, but van Lente has so much fun with it (complete with death scrunchie) that I can forgive him for working on Spider-Man.
I think the sheer level of his Herc writing actually makes his Spidey writing that much worse for me. It's like...he can clearly do awesome, so quit writing such crap.
Maybe he's just expending all his awesome on Herc stories, I dunno.
Van Lente's Spider-Man work has actually been pretty good overall. The issue with Morbius was good fun.
Even if you consider ASM to be a poisoned well now, between Power Man, Marvel Zombies, MODOK's Eleven, and Herc, Van Lente's still very firmly in the win column.

But this woman definitely needs to meet Temi.

Still doesn't detract from Delphyn's badass.

In the modern day, Japan Steel Works on Hokkaido makes some of the highest-quality, hardest steel in the world.

cf. Fontenrose....
It's a very very confused myth.
