To all things an End.

3 months in, and my how the tables have turned.

With DCnU relaunch and the domination of most of their titles across the comic book distrubutors, the mighty House of Ideas is feeling the blows. Here is a list of the titles that will be cancelled and/or will never see the light of day after February 2012.

ComicBookResources has the article discussing the latest on the growing line of titles to fall.

Daken, Dark Wolverine will end.

From the article:
"In a just-published interview with Comic Book Resources, Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso revealed Daken: Dark Wolverine will be coming to an end, following a wave of cancellations that includes X-23 and Ghost Rider.

Although he didn’t indicate when the series will conclude, February’s Issue 21 is billed as “Issue one of the story the series has been leading up to,” suggesting the beginning of the final arc...."

it continues....

"... The Daken: Dark Wolverine news follows word of the conclusions of PunisherMAX and Black Panther: The Most Dangerous Man Alive, and the cancellations of Ghost Rider, X-23, Alpha Flight, Victor Von Doom, Destroyers, Iron Man 2.0 and All-Winners Squad."

Daken is joining the ranks of these other titles,

The same goes for Doom.

Add in x-23 too. *sigh* I really wonder what the HECK is going on behind the scenes at Marvel. Running scared? Planning a DCnU like relaunch? What?

I think we can safely assume Daken and Laura will show up in other books. In fact I imagine the reason X-23 was cancelled over Avengers Academy (which has lower numbers) is that they figure they can get X-23 readers to pick up AA for Laura, this getting one book with overall better numbers.

I have no idea why X-Factor and Thunderbolts aren't getting cancelled. Presumably Jeff Parker and Peter David know where the bodies are buried.

[personal profile] arilou_skiff 2011-11-19 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That, or they're planning on switching creative teams. I guess both X-factor and T-bolts have value as IP's in a way solo books don't? Dunno.

For X-Factor, I'd imagine it's the fact that, even though their sales are low, they're really stable at the moment, so prepping for another arc of X-Factor stories is probably a safe bet. Likewise Avengers Academy.

Going with that theory, wrapping (as examples) X-23 and Dark Wolverine's books after the current arcs makes sense, as their sales were still sliding down. And Alpha Flight took a big hit after it lost the Fear Itself logo, almost doubling its losses between one month and the next; it's no wonder the status as an ongoing was revoked.

Yeah, X-23 is one of the better books Marvel has been producing of late. It's a real shame that it's being cancelled.

Nice artwork, good writing, and it was selling relatively well too. Makes me wonder just what criteria Marvel use for deciding whether something is a success.

Though, at the moment, it seems like nearly anything that doesn't have "Avengers" in the title is under threat.

Still, Winter Soldier begins in February, so at least I'll have one Marvel book to buy.

[personal profile] pyrotwilight 2011-11-19 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. I somewhat doubt the titles are being canned just because of DC's sale wins. But it does suck (wasn't reading any of them but X-23 did look like it was nice).

I do wonder if Marvel's going to be trying to overflood the market though and is cancelling the books so as to get the teams to work on a bunch of other stuff.

Word on the street is that Marvel's current financial director is an incredible tightwad who's doing his best to maximize profits at the expense of everything else; the rumor is that he's gone so far as to only provide two bathrooms for the central Marvel office in order to save cash. That's what's currently being blamed for the Destroyers and Doom titles being preemptively axed.

It's apparently an irritating time to work at Marvel, but it has nothing to do with their current editorial department. It's entirely word from above.

A lack of bathrooms? They need to get the writers offices, so they can work in a more comfortable environment!

TRo be fair I was constantly wondering why Dark Wolverine was still coming out anyway.
It's a bit of a shame about the Doom mini though. All that lovely Becky Cloonan art that could have been.

[personal profile] nomadicwriter 2011-11-19 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
The Victor Von Doom mini was apparently actually cancelled due to production problems, not sales/financial reasons like the others. (Although that itself may have had a lot to do with the original editor being let go very shortly before it was due to come out.)

But yeah, there seems to be a general impression floating around that the budget slashing has little to do with Marvel being under actual financial pressure and everything to do with this guy trying to squeeze it till it bleeds more profits.

Given the incredible and ridiculous manner in which Brevoort can do spin doctoring, and the other books cancelled as of late, I don't believe his answer, personally. They're cancelling books left and right, after all, and yet Cloonan has a rep for being a workhorse. Doesn't quite smell right to me, especially since she's still doing Conan with Brian Wood.
nomadicwriter: [Doctor Doom] Victor Von Crankypants (hmm)

[personal profile] nomadicwriter 2011-11-19 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it could be that the former editor okayed something that his replacement then decided he didn't like. I mean, if they had an issue or more's worth of art already done and then the new guy turned around and said something like, "I don't think teenage Doom should be wearing jeans and sneakers," or, "I don't want this to look like it's set in a specific decade, get rid of all the period details," I can see how that might have made it impossible to get it redone on time. Although, yep, I wouldn't be too surprised if it was these new budget restrictions that made then choose to cancel it rather than just delaying the book.

Preemptive termination always stings when you remember promotional material talking up the book's future.

Oh well, at least Panther's next status quo shift might be in good hands..

(I'm kind of hoping Alejandra stays Ghost Rider and we don't get hit with a "Spirit of Vengeance is out soon.. here's your Zarathos, Johnny! See ya later, warrior-lady.")

Eh, Alpha Flight was only a limited series to begin with. They extended it, and now they've cancelled it.

At least the team's back.

Also, Punisher MAX is coming to an end, according to Jason Aaron, because that's when his current storyline ends. It's likely to relaunch with a new creative team.

[personal profile] cleome45 2011-11-19 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, since reading this on the sister board last week, my considered opinion is that Marvel can go piss up a rope.

It didn't help that I read it just after getting home from buying groceries and realizing that I was too broke to even buy a single comic because, y'know, I blew all my money on stupid shit like food.
arbre_rieur: (Default)

[personal profile] arbre_rieur 2011-11-20 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
You yourself are pointing out that being broke can affect a person's mood in a pretty bad way, yet you're condemning a man for letting slip an ill-conceived comment after he was *just* *fired*? Really?

[personal profile] cleome45 2011-11-20 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
I blamed my bosses when I was fired. I didn't blame potential customers by spitting unfounded accusations of theft at the lot of them.

If he was hell-bent on being a jerk by playing the blame game, maybe he should've done it in private.

I can relocate the money for monthly Daken to the X-23 Trades Fund, I guess.

Also one of the important characters along one other old Marvel character were gay and.... It was good! also it had Loki and Steve! Why Marvel?! I was buying it >:(

Also I never got Bucky vs Daken fight, please someone resolve this! They teased it and Fear Itself got in the way and Bucky's "death" and FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.

Was X-23 the only Marvel title starring a female character?
salinea: (that's just rude)

[personal profile] salinea 2011-11-20 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
People were quick that Ghost Rider also stared a female character (except the usual male lead wasn't off the book, so hmmm), but then it was cancelled as well.

GR canceled so soon? Man...the plot didn't even had the time to go anywhere...this will be collected in a TPB, right?

Marvel hates female leading characters.. (at least these last couple of years, I remember when they had one of X-23 minis around, Rogue's solo title, Mystique and Emma Frost all kicking around the same time)
salinea: (Default)

[personal profile] salinea 2011-11-22 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)

I don't think they hate them, I think they don't have faith in them.
