Yeah, who knew if Jean was still alive and MJ still married to Peter would be SO depressing, I am GLAD that Jean is still dead and Peter's, I mean, MARY JANE'S deal with the devil is still going on...
I never connected that Sholly Fisch had been writing comics that long. The bulk of his career has been at DC in the last four years as far as I knew.
There are actually quite a few talented folks (particularly on WHAT IF...? -- both volumes) who created some genuinely beloved stories but whose comics career is actually quite limited.
That might actually be interesting to use WHAT IF...? as a testing ground for celebrity writers, where they can flex some continuity muscles, come to think of it.
A variety of folks like Patton Oswalt, John Hodgman, and Freddie Prinze Jr. have expressed a love for obscure storylines or attempted to cross into comics writing. Unfortunately, they had the stigma of being seen as an outsider and sales fell flat. Meanwhile, anthologies tend to suffer in the opposite direction, having little broad appeal.
Imagine if they relaunched WHAT IF...? as a place where celebrity fans got to establish continuity cred and storytelling skills.
So you might have George R.R. Martin do a Doctor Strange run that way, for example, and actually be encouraged to pursue an insular take.
Why the hell isn't Wholly Fisch writing one of the man superman books. No offense to Morrison, Lobdell, or even Diggle. (Not having read any of his run yet).
But reading the Action Comic Back ups dude clearly understand the superman universe and his story in Action Comics Annual was the best non Smallville superman story of last year.
Is it so much to ask for an ongoing with the ACA creative team.
