31 Days of Scans - Character that should have their own movie (Main Post)
This theme is perhaps a little superceded for some by the recent slates of Marvel and DC movies, which may have made some people’s dreams come true already.
On the other hand, maybe it didn’t and there’s some long overlooked character you would LOVE to see turned into a movie.
Alas, my tendency to overthink things kicked in and I realised that in terms of a movie, I was looking for something very specific.
There are many series I think deserve their own TV series (live action or animated) that’s a lot easier for me to think of, since it would allow for more characters and more development.
Amethyst is just begging for a proper cartoon series (Whether you go Masters of the Universe style, or a little more serious take a la Legend of Korra), the story of a world hopping magical girl in a dimension where gemstones have powers seems like a winner.
The New Mutants has teen drama and powers and as long as they avoid some of the unfortunate choices they made in the 1990’s “Generation X” TV movie, it could be great.
The Jack Knight Starman might be fun, as a low key superhero cum businessman, though I'd worry it might get a bit Smallville "Monster of the Week".
A Madame Xanadu anthology supernatural show could be great, as she offers advice through her card readings to people who come to her shop to ask her help with supernatural situations, and the results of them following, or not following, her advice… perhaps with guest appearances by the Phantom Stranger if things get REALLY out of hand.
No, my final choice was one that surprised even me, but as soon as I thought of it, it just clicked…
It’s Captain Marvel….
No not that Captain Marvel, the OTHER Captain Marvel
No not that one either, the OTHER other one
And probably not that one either, I mean, CAPTAIN MARVEL
You know… Monica Rambeau!
But first a little more overthinking.
When it comes to movies, I’m looking for a standalone story, which introduces the character, demonstrates their character, abilities, how they handle challenges and presents them with a foe they have to work hard to overcome… Something which doesn't demand a sequel, but might leave an opening for one.
I had two runner’s up – Cloak and Dagger would seem to be a good choice.

Simple, but very cinematically visual, powers, the flowing shadows of Cloak’s cape, the searing light-knives of Dagger. A simple story of troubled teens being given powers they don’t want and discovering that they have a weird co-dependent bond that they can’t really break. It would also involve a lot of action as they take down the drug dealers whose experiments killed a bunch of other kids and left them as they are. It could work I think…
Now, the Big Hero 6 movie doesn’t open here in the UK for a couple of months yet, so I’m not sure how close to the concept of family adventure film with a skew towards the kids it is, but Power Pack was a very close runner up.

A family of kids who get given powers by a dying alien space-seahorse, and have to defend their family and planet from evil space lizards…

Throw in Franklin Richards as the astral projecting (and randomly narcoleptic precog) Tattletale to get a link to the FF movies,

and add in Kofi, the cutest teleporting space-seahorse pony EVER.. seriously, this kid is adorable

(Oh, and looking at him, you can see why the Pack kids ended up with the boots they did, the basic design was intended to fit feet like hooves....)
I think it could be a winner... (okay, maybe save Kofi for the sequel, or omit Tattletale altogether if it's too confusing or the FF rights are still in a mess)
Should also mention that Marvel did make a pilot for the series back in 1991 that, whilst not awful, was not terribly good, it changed a lot of fundamental premises of the show (Their parents knew all about their powers for one thing), and the powers were reduced due to lack of budget; Alex could lift heavy objects or make them superheavy, but couldn't degravitise himself to lift off the ground, Julie had speed (With the rainbow trail), but not flight, Jack could only shrink rather than shrink or expand into cloudform, and Katie could reverse her disintegration process if she wanted to)
BUT...... but... neither of those is my choice... the final choice seemed so obvious, a single character, with a simple origin (As a Lieutenant in the New Orleans Harbor Patrol caught in the accidental energy blast of a lab explosion whilst trying to prevent the creation of a dangerous weapon) which could easily be expanded on to give us a villain should we need one, impressive powers with a very visual hook.
In other words, Monica Rambeau!
Now Monica was, I believe the first example of giving a name associated with a white guy and giving it to a woman of colour, but just as important was that she was a good strong character in her own right
Her first costume was memorable (It was made from a Mardi Gras outfit and IIRC a wig)

It's striking (the monochrome really works) and as her powers involve transforming into any and all forms of EM energy at will, she doesn't need to have too practical a costume and frankly i just love the puffy sleeves!
As for the powers, I got this summary from Wikipedia...
Due to bombardment by extra-dimensional energies, Rambeau can transform herself into any form of energy within the electromagnetic spectrum. Among the many energy forms she has assumed and is able to control are cosmic rays, gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet radiation, visible light, electricity, infrared radiation, microwaves, radio waves, and neutrinos. By assuming an energy-form, she gains all of that energy's properties.
She is invisible and intangible in many of her energy forms (the most frequent exception being visible light), and is capable of flight in all her energy forms (reaching velocities up to and including light speed). She also has the ability to project these energies from her body while she is in human form (only one wavelength of energy at a time), usually in the form of energy blasts from her hands. She mentally controls both the type and quantity of energy she wishes to transmit. The maximum amount of energy she can transmit at a given time is unknown. Rambeau can also divert small amounts of various energies for employment as force beams, which have the equivalent to 300 tons of TNT of explosive force. A variation of this ability enables her to project light-based holographic illusions of herself. Rambeau has also shown the ability to split her energy form into several miniature energy forms that are under her mental command, each miniature Rambeau is able to react and fly at light-speed.
When she encounters a new or unfamiliar energy, Rambeau can often duplicate it given enough time for analysis. Rambeau tends to be physically insubstantial in her energy forms, though with concentration and effort she can sometimes perform tasks such as briefly grasping an object, either by partially solidifying or by applying some sort of force to the object in question.
Now that's an fascinating set of powers, though if the movie just wanted to limit her to powers like laser beams, flight and intangibility it would be enough to be going on with.
Over the years she has been many things, solo hero, Avenger, LEADER of the Avengers even the leader (Well, I think she was, she seemed to be in charge in the bits I've seen) of Nextwave, Agents of HATE

Unfortunately, she was never able to hold on to the name, in the end going through four different names, two of which ended up being given over to Genis-Vell, the son of Mar-Vell...
Genis-Vell had started using the name off his own back, but when he met monica he eventually offered to change his name as he felt she was more worthy of it than he was, but she declined, let him keep it, and changed her own codename to "Photon".
A whilst later Genis decided to call himself Photon too... and Monica (presumably with a deep sigh at the white boy who kept nicking her names) chose to change her name to one she liked better anyway "Pulsar".
A bit later she changed her mind, and chose a new name which is a little more representative of her powers "Spectrum".... which she still using today in her current role in the Mighty Avengers...
Alas, it's Greg Land art on these last couple of images, and her skintone seems to be a bit paler than it's been before in some shots (I suppose it depends who he is tracing from)

I like that costume, but I do miss the sleeves.
But never forget that Monica a strong, determined character with a fascinating range of powers....

Dunno about you, but I would watch the hell out of her movie.
Now, over to you good people... who would YOU want to see in a movie
Actually, if you want to make it a TV series instead, then I think we can stretch the limitations of the theme. Mod prerogative and all that :)

And whatever did happen with Alex turning into a Kymellian anyway?
no subject
The "Alex turns into a space horsey because of the Kymellian DNA in him (and inherenetly in them all) because of the powers Whitey gave them" was turned into a plot point in the Power Pack Holiday Special released a couple of years after the series ended.
The Special was written by Simonson and Brigman and It basically undid all the generally reviled Michael Higgins created plot points. In particular it revealed that the semi-Kymellian Alex had never been Alex at all, but a sort of clone used by an evil Kymellian who had kidnapped Jack and wanted no one to know. The Kymellian-ness was a result of the Kymellian process used to create the clone being imperfect, and human being a form the genetic material couldn't hold for long (and it should be noted the clone had no idea it was a clone either as it had a copy of Alex memory and personality). The Power kids finally found out about the switch and rescued Alex, in the process their powers were switched around again to their original distribution.

And the art really sold it, the notion that the cloak was not a material thing so much as a three dimensional hole in space into somewhere else... and the somewhere else is scary as hell. Cloak appearing in from of a runaway subway train and just standing there whilst it disappeared into his cloak (briefly) was a very impressive moment.

Oh, and Monica's parents should be played by Pam Grier and Sylvester Stallone, a nod to how she originally appeared and her last name.

Cloak and Dagger would view like the Daredevil movie. With those parameters.
Now Power Pack is money. The way they shell out family movie silliness these days, Power Pack could be milked to the bank. Kind of shocked there's not already a cartoon from Disney.
