Civil War II: The Quest for Peace #5

civilwar5cover

Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: David Marquez

This is mostly a fight issue with very little story. As such, let's just skip to the end where the point is. Ulysses has another vision!

civilwarii0502

civilwarii0503

Miles: How do you know?

Kamala: I just do.

civilwarii0504

Carol, you haven't learned a damn thing have you?

Because of course arresting someone who isn't even identifiable because he's wearing a full body stocking and head cowl is entirely justifiable in law.

And how is Ulysses even sharing the vision, that's never been something he can do, is it?

And, heck, given the amount of clones, alternate reality counterparts, and old plain imitators who is to say that the guy with the spike through his chest is their Cap either. He could be Captain Hydra from Earth-616 for all they know.

No, wait...

Actually, hasn't vision-sharing been something he's been doing for a while? I thought that he made a bunch of people see the vision of the hulk killing everyone (could be wrong though).

Miles' reaction tend to prove it's him, otherwise he would said something like "hey, that guy is not me, I was looking at him from the outside!"

Ulysses, please have a vision of Carol killing someone so she can arrest herself

[personal profile] scorntx 2016-09-21 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, someone'll just hand her a note saying "why don't you arrest the whole world?"
At which point Carol will get all sad and surrender.

... hey, it worked for the Hulk.

erm... why? you have yet to prove Tony's results are wrong. hell, you have yet to prove the woman you arrested actually DID anything wrong.
Also, wonder if it is because of the "Cap is a Nazi" stuff

Did we see Miles actually killing Cap (is he still controlled by Hydra btw?) or just a masked individual standing over a body? Because that can go many ways. I think Carol is seriously jumping the gun on this one, again.

Also, at what point will Marvel show us a vision of Carol being a killer and then refusing to arrest herself? That is the scene we are all waiting for the bit where suddenly the detention is wrong when it is her life that is going to be disrupted.

When the visions are this specific, there are easier ways to prevent them than arrest.

"Hey Miles, how about you wear this white Spider-Man costume from now on, and burn all the black ones?"

Of course, that's assuming it's even Miles in the suit to begin with...

Calling it now. The "final vision" in the final issue is Ulysses being killed by someone. Anyone. Everyone. And then it comes true. And he dies. And we all sigh in relief.

Or it doesn't come true, and everyone realizes that the future isn't set in stone, and they feel like massive assholes for the whole affair.

Or he kills himself to thwart the prophecy.

I wonder if a racial angle is going to be added to this. I mean what Carol is doing is messed up regardless of the race of person she apprehends but given the current climate, I can see one being added to the story.

Ah, so I guess this will be remembered as the "Newer teenage POC characters getting jerked around for the sake of drama" crossover.

I mean, the editors at Marvel can't possibly have missed the popularity of Kamala at least, that makes her a target for when they want to try to force her own readers to care about their convoluted, melodramatic Phillip K. Dick bullshit.

Re: Kamala -- that's an interesting question

[personal profile] chortles81 2016-09-22 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Considering how wildly different in tone her latest appearances have been across four different books (this, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #10 [which basically completely ignores CW2], Ms. Marvel #10, Spider-Man #8) I wonder what the comic execs believe is the success 'rate' of Kamala's solo book as a gateway title to their other titles as opposed to "only Marvel for Ms. Marvel" (no pun intended).

So according to Ulysses' visions, half of Marvel's heroes are about two weeks away from murdering someone. That seems unlikely--Hawkeye notwithstanding--and if it is true, Carol's going to need to come up with a slightly more comprehensive solution than "throw each hero in jail until they're feeling less homicidal." Does the entire superhero community need psych meds and counseling?

[personal profile] scorntx 2016-09-21 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much, yeah.
Peter Parker more than most.

Though the only significant conclusion anyone's gonna come away with is that he needs a ludicrously attractive wife of some kind...

So...um...how many of Ulysses' visions have actually come true?

The Hulk one didn't.

The woman with the briefcase thing didn't.

Is he even batting .500 at this point?

Carol really doesn't have a leg to stand on in this series. The one good thing that came of Ulysses' visions was Thanos being captured, and her idiocy screwed that up, too.

Does Marvel not understand that having everybody be dickheads isn't the same as having a story where two opposing sides both have a valid point?

[personal profile] silicondream 2016-09-22 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Come true, or would have come true if the heroes hadn't intervened?

Ulysses has predicted a lot of criminal activity that Carol's team successfully prevented. His visions seem to be mostly accurate; Carol says that acting on them has saved thousands of lives, and I think we're supposed to take her as correct on that bit.

Of course, the accurate visions are usually the ones that seemed plausible in the first place, because they involved a known villain going out and and doing villainy things. As opposed to the visions where a superhero suddenly strangles a kitten or something.

Wow. Even more than previous, this issue was a waste. I get that Tony and Carol are grieving and might not be in the best frame of mind (though that brings up the question of why Carol is in charge of ANYTHING right now, instead of her friends and teammates insisting she take some time off to get her head together) right now...

But this whole thing is predicated on everyone acting like an unreasonable idiot. This is not something you come to blows over. You talk it out. You have some of the smartest people in the world here. Adam, T'challa, Hank, yiu could bring in Amadeus...

But instead you've put things in the hands of the two people least qualified to make decisions right now, and are pretty much blindly following.

At least the tie-ins have generally been good.

You know, for all the problems in this event, I have to say this is a brilliant way to use Hydra Cap. A vision of Miles, bloodied, standing over the dead body of Captain America, is one that strikes terror into the hearts of everyone present, because *everyone* there knows what Steve Rogers stands for.

Except none of them know what's been done to him, and what he currently stands for. So this vision could show Miles saving the world from a dire fate, but Captain Marvel is arresting Miles to stop it. This is the nail that proves Tony's point. In trying to save the future, Carol could very well be dooming it.

And I think this event tells us their out for Ulysses. Steve's going to kill him. This event is going to spook him, it's too close to revealing him, and he's going to set about finding a way to eliminate Ulysses in a way that won't be traceable back to him.

Also, I really don't want to ship Kamala/Miles but they keep having moments like this where they make me want to ship them. My brain keeps going "They're just friends! They have their own titles! With their own love interests, it's never going to happen!" But my inner fanboy goes "Squee!"

I wonder where Peter is during all this. Keeping him out of this fight was a very deliberate choice, I wonder how he's going to react all of this. He's a very big piece not to have on the board at this point.
