Devil's Reign: X-Men #2: "Truth & Consequences"

"For the children." -- Emma Frost

Last issue: back in the 1980s (okay, it should be the '80s, but it was probably just, like, ten years ago Marvel-time), both Emma Frost and Elektra worked for the Kingpin. One night, a little girl saw Elektra assassinate someone, so Elektra went to Emma and asked her to mindwipe the girl. However, the Kingpin already got word that there was a witness and, well, he takes more extreme measures to witnesses.

Cue: Emma Frost and Elektra kidnapping the girl...with the help of a special guest.

Didn't Emma brainwash quite a few children during her Hellfire Days?

I figure brainwashing is one thing, she can justify that as "helping" or "teaching" them.

"Justifying" doesn't necessarily mean that they're "right".

Considering Empath had just tried using his powers to turn Emma's anger at him into love, I actually side with Emma here.

I'm actually struggling to think of characters who know Empath and don't want to kill him.

"I'll probably have to kill you one day" is the single kindest thought that anyone has ever had about Empath

Most people who meet him don't bother with the "probably" or "one day" they just skip right to "I will kill you"

Not sure it's less excusable, as he's threatening to drive another student to suicide, getting indignant when Emma rebukes him, and heavily implying he'll just use his powers to get others to protect him if they won't do so voluntarily.

He's always used his powers to make his team-mates protect him (and as we saw in the Hellions title, still does), and the threat she makes seems less because of what he's doing, but because he doesn't stop when she tells him to.

This makes the many, many times Emma's students have been horribly murdered look a touch suspicious.

Again, it's Empath. Her considering killing him isn't as inexcusable as her NOT doing it. He makes people fall in love briefly, then makes them hate each other just for giggles...or worse, only makes one of them hate the other.

Wasn't he trying to seduce her with his powers, i.e. rape her?

[personal profile] tinygaylaura 2022-03-04 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm fine with characters smacking Empath around and threatening to kill him regardless of what age he is at the time

He'll get a bitchslap

Oh snap

Please avoid gendered slurs like "bitch" on scans_daily

It's Empath. He's the Purple Man of mutantkind. Capable of getting people to do anything he wants and incapable of emotionally connecting with any of his victims. Killing him would be doing a favor to the world.

I thought that was Mesmero. Maybe they can share the title.

Empath, Mesmero, Mastermind. Daken, Mandrill. We're spoiled for choice.

It was the eighties, cut her some slack

Charles Xavier used to brainwash whole towns on a near-daily basis
