Mod Post: Off-Topic Tuesday

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.

An earthquake that hit along the IrnIraq border has caused chaos in both countries, with a death toll of at least 440 and thousands injuries and left homeless.

Did you know there was a statue on the moon? I didn't, but this is a fascinating story, if slightly disheartening given the furore that it stirred up on all sides.

In the UK, Secretary of State for Bolloxing up Brexit David Davis "conceded" that Parliament would be allowed a final vote on Brexit, but since the two options would be "Vote to accept whatever we have decided on" or "Vote to reject it and we crash out of the EU without any deal at all" one has to wonder why he thought that might have anything like a positive spin.

To her vague credit Theresa May meanwhile has accused Putin and Russia in the strongest terms yet for their meddling in the elections of other countries (whilst still accepting the outcomes of those elections, which would include the sodding Brexit referendum, as gospel). Compare and contrast with POTUS45 who has stated that he believes Putin's denials of interference, over the evidence presented by his own Intelligence agencies (Though even he backtracked a little when he seems to have realised (or more likely been told) how bad THAT looked, but even then... good grief)

Disney Channel has introduced the channel's first ever gay storyline in their aimed-at-young-teens show "Andi Mack", when one of the main characters, 13 year old Cyrus, realises he has a crush on the same boy Andi does and comes out to his friend Buffy (but not Andi, yet, because episodic drama). Critics and gay rights groups have praised the episode, though it's one of those odd situations where they don't use the word "gay", "homosexual" or "queer" but make it work anyway.

Jodie Whittaker's outfit as the 13th Doctor, and her TARDIS, has been revealed, albeit not helped by the fact the released image was photoshopped, and the coat is actually pale blue. (Comparison's have been drawn with Mork from Mork and Mindy (Though he had the rainbow stripes AS his braces, not in addition to them), Wesley Crusher's stripey uniform in STNG, and Adrien Agreste from Miraculous Ladybug.

The first Barbie to be modelled with a hijab has been released, modelled after the US Olypmic Bronze Medal winning fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad.

Amazon have announced a TV adaption of "The Lord of the Rings"... which is an ambitious undertaking to say the least.

Star Trek: Discovery had it's "fall finale", with the apparent wrap-up of it's first major arc, but left the ship in.. and unexpected position. Will be interested to see where it goes from here.

Batman #34 - "The Rule of Engagement, Part 2"

When you approach a character like Batman, the only thing you can bring to it that’s new – because Batman’s been written by everybody, has done every medium, for 78 years — is you. In trying to do something different, something that surprises people, you look to what you care about in your life and your great passion. I’m passionately in love with my wife; it’s been that way for 17 years, and that’s a source of great happiness to me and it’s a source of the biggest dramas in my life, the biggest risks I’ve taken in life, like leaving her to go to Iraq or something like that. So, I wanted to bring that emotion and passion and put it into comic books. So, it just comes from me stealing from my own life, which is probably a good place to steal from. -- Tom King

Dark Ark #1

"Noah, during the onset of the Great Flood, gathered up all of the animals of the world to spare them and ensure that life continued here on Earth. DARK ARK presents the idea that Noah was not the only person to build an ark. There was a second vessel, built by a sorcerer named Shrae, that housed all the unnatural creatures of the world–the vampires, manticores, giants, werewolves, and the like."

- Cullen Bunn
