So... how did he turn into a super zombie? Rage and Happenstance?
icon_uk: (Default)

[personal profile] icon_uk 2013-09-13 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
He committed suicide in a place called Slaughter Swamp, I think the genre conventions of the slasher horror movies (Which the original Solmon Grundy's origin predates by many years) would practically INSIST he be revived as a super-zombie! :)

I think he has mystical connections to.. whatever the Earth2 antithesis of the Green Lantern is, so I think that's all the oriign we need.

Though it looks like Solomon's wife ALSO committed suicide in the Slaughter Swamp. But I highly doubt she gets to come back as a rage zombie.

I feel sort of cheated, all the guys get to come back and avenge their wronged fridged loved ones but the women never do.

didn't scarlett Avenger (or something) come back like that? Also Fury? Also there were several "crows" that were female. (sure not nearly as many as the men, but there have been women that have come back that way.

although she killed herself out of despair, so she would probably come back as a despair monster....

Crimson Avenger.

I can't remember her origin, offhand.

She tried to shoot herself with the pistols belonging to the original Crimson Avenger, who was essentially the Shadow before he became more of an ordinary nonlethal superhero.

I can only imagine the wife coming back as a Rage Zombie and learning that her husband went straight for the murder/suicide instead of taking care of the kid.

Green Lantern is an agent of the Green, and Grundy of the Grey.

No hint as to who, if anyone, the Red is fielding in this universe.

It's still kind of weird to me that Solomon Grundy was given a connection to the Grey and not the Rot. Linking Earth-2's Green Lantern to the Animal Man/Swamp Thing cosmology that's emerged would have been a cool idea if they'd actually done it for real.

Slaughter Swamp being named after a slaughter house does actually make a degree of sense, though if it's warm enough for alligators wouldn't the humidity make the meat go weird?

also though, the guy who runs the place was shown to be less than ethical...

You mean this is another villain who could have been prevented by proper health and safety inspection.

Seriously, it gets a bad rep for being petty and overprotective, but think about how many villains owe their origins to crappy safety protocols.

I don't see that they're complicent from these scans. Just very passive about things.

What I get from the scans is "My wife is dead. Rage! I'm killing my boss. I'm killing everyone."

You both mean "complicit," not "complacent."

And I guess you could argue that anyone who knew about sexual harassment/rape and stood around fearing for their jobs so saying nothing is complicit in a real way.

You probably don't want to read annnny part of this issue, then.

...and maybe avoid DC's entire output this month, come to think of it. It's like someone hired editorial to develop a literary cure for Joker venom.

Not digging the old "wife commits suicide, driving husband mad" schtick, though Grundy's origin was never great anyway so it's as good as any.

What actually bugs me, weirdly enough, is that his name is actually Solomon now.

[personal profile] jlbarnett 2013-09-14 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
obviously, now his death is the origin of the Solomon Grundy rhyme.

Still I can't believe they're tying a variation of the normal Slaughter Swamp origin to the Death God Grundy thing though

It looks like his wife's body was not recovered. Maybe she's the Red Lantern.

obviously, now his death is the origin of the Solomon Grundy rhyme.

He recites the rhyme to his kid (probably Solomon, jr, to explain that).

Sooo... where's Cyrus Gold?

At first I'd assumed the slaughterhouse boss was Gold, and he was going to be Solomon Grundy. That he worked the men to death, then butchered/sold their bodies for meat, and their families found out and killed him but he came back as some sort of super-ghoul.

Is this really better than the old Cyrus Gold origin? Or is it (par for the DCnU) just darker and grimmer (and of course plain old nastier) just for the sake of it?

I really didn't think they could make Grundys origin any worse... and then they did it. This is why we can't have nice things.
