Adventure Comics #1

Does anyone else think Superman's attitude towards Lex here is a little OOC? I mean, they used to be friends when they  were kids and in Grant Morrison's JLA run Superman said that "there's a good man in there somewhere."

The issue also introduces a new character, Simon Valentine, who will apparently be Superboy's "greatest friend-- and his greatest enemy." Even before that line he reminded me a little bit of a young Lex Luthor. It'll be interesting to see what happens with him.

Also, this was on DC's main page.

Is it me or it Clark's bulge somewhat prominent in the first scan? I'm starting to think I see it every time they show a superhero's crotch.

I was reading a great blog a while ago (though not that great if I can't remember in retrospect) that artists weren't always so SQUEAMISH about bulges like they are now. The gist was "what does it say about us when we accept grotesquely built bodies but shy away from even the barest realistic detail in the crotch? What poor mutilated things our heroes are now!"

I cannot help but agree. Blame the puritanical U.S.? Other than that, I got nothin'

Not sure about that. These boys seem to have suffered some artistic neutering.

I think there is much more attention paid to drawing "bulges" now than ever before. Certainly, during the days of the Comics Code, the art was checked for anything too suggestive. It's a major reason for the trunks over many super-hero tights... lets the legs muscles show while disguising genital outlines.

It's a constant struggle between the urge to flaunt and the urge to cover up.

If there's no package, then balls can't touch.

I'll be honest, I'm much fonder of heroes who wear clothes rather than spandex. I get the "colourful hero" thing, but everybody does that, there's hundreds of them. It's really refreshing to see a hero wearing pants, for crying out loud. And of course, you do that and bulges aren't an issue.
