Why I Love Guy Gardner

There are some people who prefer Hal Jordan. Others who prefer Kyle Rayner. Yet others with great affection for John Stewart or Ruffles the Rage Kitty. But they're not me. Because I like a different GL.

Guy was so awesome in Blue Beetle. One day he and Milagro will team up and the world will tremble in fear.

Hell yes. Just look at that superhero pose:

He should make her a power ring and declare her 'Lantern Girl.'

[identity profile] kd_the_movie.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
i would be beyond happy if Guy became Milagro's canon mentor.

[identity profile] endis_ni.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Dammit, yes!

[identity profile] faile_neume.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
That is my personal canon. Milagro becomes a GL and is AWESOME. (She also dates Lian, but thats just the slasher in me saying what should happen)

[identity profile] bariman1987.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I always thought of Milagro and Chris Kent, if only for the hilarity of the Reyes freaking out over Superman coming over for dinner, and in walks in this quiet, unassuming guy in glasses and a business suit.

[identity profile] jlbarnett.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
that would be awesome.

[identity profile] faile_neume.insanejournal.com 2009-07-06 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
But we can't have het couples in fandom! Fandom doesn't work that way. (says me, who ships Tim/M'gann)

That would be pretty hilarious though. Lois and Biance Reyes hanging out would be awesome as well.

[identity profile] porringer.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
So much word.

[identity profile] generalfreedom.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
That part in JLA Classified always gets to me.

The last scans also reminds me that I really need to get the rest Blue Beetle collections. That was such a good series! It should have had a longer run.

I am so f*cking tired of seeing the Orpheus story replayed note for note.
Everyone KNOWS that story, and yet we're expected to believe the characters either don't, or will make the very same mistake anyway.
It's like watching anyone who's supposed to have an ounce of brains or genre savvy go down into the dark basement without a light source.

[identity profile] pyrotwilight.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Will on Fresh Prince of Bel Air: Aww man, don't do it. Don't go down the basement. Oh come on, can't you hear the scary music? Ohhhhh, there he goes.

Etrigan cited it specifically, the Orpheus Protocol, because he knew it always works.

One final thing
I really should tell.
They always look back,
that's why it's called Hell.

[identity profile] cmdr_zoom.insanejournal.com 2009-07-06 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, well, my patience for "people do something stupid because the genre requires it" happens to be at a low right now.

Seriously. I want to see an Orpheus story where the leader get their loved one out safely because they know how this works, and have the logic and willpower not to screw it up. Because looking back is the one guaranteed way to fail. If you get out of Hell and they still aren't there, that's a separate problem.

[identity profile] runespoor7.insanejournal.com 2009-07-06 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone knows how it works, that's the point. It's only really tragic because Orpheus (and everyone put in the same position after him) knows what happens if they give in, and they can't help themselves anyway.

[identity profile] shadowpsykie.insanejournal.com 2009-10-24 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
i agree, thats why it works so well. Everyone knows the rules. everyone knows what will happen. but when you are put in the position, who amongst us can say with perfect certainty that we will not look back. Both guy and Bea loved her so much. I LOVE that last page you can see the absolute heart break, i SERIOUSLY started tearing up.

I also love that Ice didnt seem to fault Bea, all she said was, "Bea. you always did care too much."

[identity profile] pyrotwilight.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
"We're dead" That line and expression always makes me giggle.

[identity profile] thokstar.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
<3 Ice

Guy's cool too.

[identity profile] lieut_kettch.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Milagro and Guy? I pity the world then. They have enough to fear from Anger Girl and Stick Boy.

[identity profile] ashtoreth.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think my favorite part of this scan is the non-sequitor ridiculous conversation when they pop back.

speaking as a Hal Jordan man...

[identity profile] thehefner.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
When the Robot 6 blog did a piece on "The 6 Comics That Made Us Cry," (http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2009/06/six-by-6-six-comics-that-made-us-cry/) and everyone else was replying with WE3 or SILVER SURFER: REQUIEM (fine choices both, don't get me wrong), I was the sole person to chime in with the above one-two punch from I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S NOT THE JUSTICE LEAGUE.

There was more genuine, heart-wrenching emotion in this silly comedic B-list superhero spin-off than in all of the INFINITE CRISIS titles going on at the same time. I’m getting misty just *thinking* about that issue.

The true reunion with Ice in GLC was just gravy. But it definitely took a lot of growing and maturity on Guy's part to make it was moving as it was. Which is why the character is so endearing, in spite of himself, and rewarding to follow. Eventually. :)

Motto to all of this. It's that last page, with Bea and Guy breaking down in each other's arms. For that one moment, all the shit between them doesn't matter. They have so many differences, but when it comes to Tora nothing else matters. It's also the second time in the issue where one of them goes with what looks like it'll be a punch, but ends up being a hug. ;_;

I like so many people in GLC, but Guy is easily my favorite. He's gotten so much better since JLI started.

O HAI this reminds me -

I may have grown up with Kyle Rayner, but Guy is *my* GL. Though he seems to be only an immature jock, there's a depth to him that's not present in the other earth Green Lanterns. You only have to read about his relationship with his older brother, his personality pre-coma, and the roots of the rivalry with Hal to understand this. Part of the reason why I ship Guy/Tora so hard is that unlike many others, Tora actually tries to connect with that side of Guy.

Confession time: that immature jock side I mentioned earlier? I'm also one of those women who happen to like assholes :P

[identity profile] yaseen101.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
First scan, you know Ice is enamored by Fire's boobs touching her and in the where she is hugging Guy, it looks like she is actually looking and Fire's bare breast.

[identity profile] kusonaga.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
You're never alone.

Guy Gardner is without a doubt my favourite GL.

I do wonder if Tora knows about Fire and his little fling during his Warrior days, though.

[identity profile] darklorelei.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
That's what OT3s are for, my friend.

[identity profile] icon_uk.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oddly out of all that, bar the Reyes saying just about anything, my favourite line is Fire in the last scan; "If you fail to comply, the consequences will be... well, ME!"

[identity profile] thormonger.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
That scene in Hell was most heartbreaking.

Could anyone tell me how Ice came back, and where? I had that Superbuddies arc, and then the reunion in GLC, but she couldn't have just suddenly shown up alive. (I'm glad she is, though, because I'd hate to see her as a Black Lantern.)

[identity profile] thandrak.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
Birds of Prey, during the Birds/Secret Six crossover. Not sure of the exact issues. Crazy Russian Separatist General brings her back for... still not sure why.

[identity profile] joseph_k101.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn, I love the art in the Superbuddies story.

You can really see the emotion, frickin' awesome!

[identity profile] kagome654.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you are so not alone. Kyle is my fictional boyfriend, I champion Hal and John is probably the one I admire the most, but Guy is the Lantern I'd want to hang out with. He's just so friggen entertaining (and secretly lovable). You've picked some excellent moments here.

...I need Guy icons.

[identity profile] runespoor7.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Kyle is my fictional boyfriend

No, Kagome, don't!

[identity profile] kagome654.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I laugh in the face of danger! And my refrigerator is far too small to store a corpse

[identity profile] timemonkey.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Not if you're liquified!

[identity profile] kagome654.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Crud. A really clever villain would make sure some of my liquefied form ends up in the ice cube trays, just because.

[identity profile] jasper_stars.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Guy would be my drinking buddy. ...If I drank.

Much love for him <333

[identity profile] psychop_rex.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
So, wait - I don't get it. After 'you guys are more trouble than you're worth', why is Ice being zapped back to the pit there? What happened?

[identity profile] cmdr_zoom.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Orpheus and Eurydice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orpheus#Death_of_Eurydice)

[identity profile] psychop_rex.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait - so Ice was in the Eurydice role? But who looked back? I see Bea taking a sidelong glance at Guy there, but it certainly doesn't look like she's looking behind her.

[identity profile] lady_mondegreen.insanejournal.com 2009-07-05 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
They're both struggling not to look behind themselves as they walk out of Hades. Fire tries to sneak a glance out of the corner of her eye to assure herself that Ice is following, and that causes Ice to vanish.

[identity profile] psychop_rex.insanejournal.com 2009-07-06 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Seems to be that the artist could've been a little more clear about that, but I'll take your word for it.
kingrockwell: he's a sexy (The Super-Buddies!)

[personal profile] kingrockwell 2009-07-06 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Even if the Bea-glancing panel wasn't clear enough, Tora's line in the panel after it leaves no room for confusion.
